Habitat Seeks Volunteers to Help Build New Partner Home

August 16, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

Volunteers are needed to finish construction on the new Habitat for Humanity home.

The residence at 204 Hayes Street is being built for Jamie Nokes and her family Jayde Stanley, Tayvian Nokes, Desmond Nokes, and Justis Nokes.

“This is an exciting time as we work on our 6th Home for Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County. We hope to be able to move this family in by the end of October but no later than the first of December. We request your participation and you to encourage others to help as well,” said Habitat spokesman Alex Woodward.

“The project will be completed by volunteers with the exceptions of the areas in which a licensed professional is required. Everyone is invited to help and jobs can be found for anyone. If you would like to volunteer, please email awoodward@wilsonbank.com and if you are skilled in a certain line of construction work please indicate that or you may call 615-215-8181 and leave a message for construction. Please include name, number, email address, and skill,” he continued.

“Most of our construction is done on Saturdays. We have a group from the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church coming in on August 18. Last week we had Outreach Baptist Church help us. Right now we have August 25 open and we would love to have either a church or other group come and help on our site that day. We will take off Labor Day weekend and then we will have the Smithville Church of God come help us on September 8,” said Woodward.

“We have the footer and foundation done and the subfloor is down. We also have all four exterior walls up. We have been working on getting the interior walls done for the framing and then we will be able to move toward the ceiling joists. Once we get the ceiling joists we have a framer or two that has volunteered to come in and do the roof for us,” added Woodward.

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County was formed in 2003. They have built five homes in the Smithville area and own property with plans to build future homes. Houses are constructed by volunteers and paid by donations from various fundraisers including the Fiddler 5K, Jackson Kayak Raffle, Golf Tournament, Yeti cooler raffle and the Chili cook off. The purpose of Habitat is to build houses and sell them at no profit and no interest to families who could not otherwise afford their own home. This Christian ministry is financed through private donations using volunteer labor and donated materials whenever possible.

DeKalb County Recognizes Community Health Center Week

August 16, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

The DeKalb County Community Health Center/Health Department is celebrating National Health Center Week Aug. 12-18. The goal of this observance is to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers and the dedicated staff members who bring health care to the medically underserved.

There are 14 community health centers/health departments across the Upper Cumberland Region. These health centers provide full-service adult and pediatric primary care as well as preventive health services to anyone with private insurance, TennCare or Medicare as well as those without insurance. They are part of nationwide network of health centers that serve more than 27 million Americans.

The heroes who work at health centers and help make affordable health care possible for people in need are at the center of this year’s NHCW. This includes doctors, nurses, dentists, administrative staff members and much more. Working together, these dedicated and caring professionals produce innovative solutions to the most pressing health care issues in their communities. It is their work that has helped generate a record of success.
