MR. Bond’s Science Guys to Open Library Summer Reading Program Thursday, June 1

Another month of summer fun is in store next month for children during the 2023 DeKalb County Libraries Summer Reading Program for the Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries.
The four-week event kicks off Thursday, June 1st and will be held each Thursday at 2 p.m. through June 22 at the DeKalb County Complex Theatre Room. This year’s theme is “All Together Now”.
Mr. Bond’s Science Guys’ , whose mission is to make science fun, cool and easy for kids, will be featured at the opening party on June 1st at 2 p.m.
Children of all ages can begin registering today for Summer Reading at both libraries. Each child that registers and meets their goal will receive a participation certificate and other goodies at the end of the Summer Reading Program. Children do not have to attend the events to participate in the Summer Reading Program.
Other Summer Reading events in June are:
Thursday, June 8th at 2:00 pm – Barry Mitchell’s “Friendship Adventure”.
Thursday, June 15th at 2:00 pm –. Edgar Evins State Park Rangers and Animal Friends.
Thursday, June 22nd at 2:00 pm – Final Party with Bob Tartar’s Animalogy Critters.
There will be four Summer Reading Craft Sessions at the County Complex Art Room on June 7th and June 14th at 10:00 am and 11:30 am. Sign up at the library is required as the number of participants in each session is limited.

Smithville Jamboree Announces East Nash Grass 2023 Blue Blaze Winner

The Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree and Crafts Festival has awarded East Nash Grass the Blue Blaze Award for the 52nd annual event. The Blue Blaze Award is given to artists for continuing and promoting bluegrass music. East Nash Grass is considered “Nashville’s newest bluegrass ambassadors”.
Featuring a who’s-who of Nashville’s hottest young pickers, the joy and passion these musicians feel towards the genre is infused in every note they play and every word they sing.
“We are thrilled to give this year’s award to East Nash Grass. James Kee (guitar & vocals) has been playing at the jamboree for many years. You could often find him with the shade tree pickers. Kee is also the leader of the Jamboree House Band. Maddy Denton (fiddle), a jamboree favorite and Grand Master Fiddler, started competing in fiddle contests very young and has won many of the Fiddlers’ Jamboree awards, from National Beginner Fiddler to Junior Fiddler to Grand Champion Fiddler”, stated Jamboree President Kim Driver Luton. Other notable members of the band include Gaven Largent (dobro), Jeff Picker (bass) and TWO! IBMA Momentum Award-winners for Best Instrumentalist, Cory Walker(banjo) and Harry Clark (Mandolin).
The award will be presented on Saturday, July 1st @5:00 pm – followed by music provided by East Nash Grass. The Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree & Craft Festival is free to the public. 2023 Miss Jamboree Pageants Set for June 24

The 2023 Miss Jamboree Pageants are set for Saturday, June 24 at the DeKalb County Complex starting at 10:00 a.m. managed by the Smithville Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Alexis Grace Atnip was crowned the 2022 Miss Jamboree in the age 17-20 category.
All Tennessee girls, babies, and toddlers may enter by June 16th.
The entry fee is $25.00 per contestant. A People’s Choice Award will also be given in each category and there are optional awards of prettiest eyes, hair, attire, and photogenic. The entry fee for optionals is $5.00 in each category. All winners in the 11-13, 14-16, and 17-20 are required to participate during the Fiddlers Jamboree June 30 & July 1 to help distribute trophies, flyers, etc.
Age groups are as follows:
Boys and girls- one day to 6 months
Boys and girls- 7-12 months
Boys and girls-13-24 months
Boys and girls-25-48 months
Girls-4-6 years
Girls-7-10 years
Girls-11-13 years
Girls- 14-16 years
Girls-17-20 years
Include on the entry form, name and age of contestant, complete address and phone number, parents or guardians’ names, and answer “I love the Jamboree Because”.
Mail completed entry form and fees to Angie Meadows, 3385 New Home Road, Smithville 37166. Make checks payable to the Smithville Business & Professional Women’s Club.
