Woodbury Woman Injured in Rollover Crash

An elderly Woodbury woman was injured in a rollover crash Wednesday on New Home Road (State Route 83) near Hendrix Road.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 82 year old Geneva Byford was traveling south in a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox when the vehicle ran off the right side of roadway striking a mailbox and driveway culvert causing the automobile to overturn.

Byford was taken by DeKalb EMS to Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital to be treated for suspected minor injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Members of the DeKalb County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Rory Comardelle.

A machete attack on another person has landed a Dowelltown man in serious trouble with the law.

61-year-old Juilio Neisa Hernandez of West Main Street, Dowelltown, is charged with aggravated assault. He is under a $50,000 bond and will be in court on December 15.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on November 27 a deputy was summoned to West Main Street in Dowelltown due to a domestic incident.

Upon arrival, the deputy found a man on the ground bleeding profusely from a large cut to his head.

While speaking to the victim and other witnesses, the officer learned that Hernandez and the victim had gotten into an argument, resulting in Hernandez hitting the victim in the head with a machete, causing him to fall off the porch of the home. Hernandez was placed in custody.

24-year-old Alicia Leanne Miller of Tompkinsville, Kentucky, was arrested for public intoxication on November 18. She is under a $1,500 bond and her court date is December 1.

Sheriff Ray said that a deputy was summoned to Midnight Express on Sparta Highway due to a report of an unwanted guest who was highly intoxicated. Upon arrival the deputy spoke with a security guard who said that he had a former employee there who was intoxicated. She was asked to leave several times because she was causing problems inside the business.

The deputy then spoke with the woman, Miller. She had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person and she was unsteady on her feet. Miller’s eyes were glossy and her speech was slurred. She was placed under arrest.

52-year-old John William Jones of Johnsons Chapel Road, Sparta, was arrested on November 21 for a violation of an order of protection. He is under a $2,500 bond and he will make a court appearance on December 15.

Sheriff Ray said that Jones had been served with an order of protection that day but returned to the residence where he was ordered to keep away from. He was then placed into custody.

40-year-old Jimmy Joel Farris of Highland Street, Smithville, was arrested on November 27 for operating a vehicle with no driver’s license. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is set to appear in court on December 15.

According to Sheriff Ray, a deputy spotted Farris driving on West Broad Street in Smithville and pulled him over. The deputy, and other officers, had previously given Farris several warnings and citations for driving without a license. A background check through central dispatch confirmed that Farris had no driver license.

36-year-old Matthew James Savage of Bell Street Apartments, Smithville, was arrested on November 27 for driving under the influence. He is under a $1,500 bond and will be in court on December 15.

Sheriff Ray said that a deputy while on patrol spotted a black GMC truck leave its lane of travel. After a traffic stop, the deputy spoke with the driver, Savage, who admitted to having consumed several alcoholic beverages. Savage had a strong smell of alcohol coming from his person. He submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. Found in the cup holder of the truck was an open cocktail.
