Scammers are at it again and this time its over jury duty!
Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins said several people lately have reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Smithville Police Department. In the call, the scammer tells the intended victim that he or she has failed to answer a summons for jury duty by the police department and are in trouble with the law. However the scammer goes on to tell his victim that the issue may be resolved if they send money.
Chief Collins says this is a scam and the public should not fall for it. According to Chief Collins, the Smithville Police Department does not issue summons for jury duty and no one from the department is making these calls. If you should receive such a call, Chief Collins said you should hang up and then report it to the Smithville Police Department. For further questions about jury duty contact the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.

Upon arrival he confronted Williams who, according to the officer, was very irate and approached him in an aggressive manner. Williams continued to aggressively move toward to the deputy even after being warned several times to step back. The officer then grabbed Williams trying to detain him and during the struggle Williams struck the deputy on the left side of his face and scratched his left pinky finger. Needing backup, the deputy radioed for emergency assistance and other officers arrived on the scene. Upon entering the home, detectives found the arresting officer engaged in a physical struggle with John Williams. As they intervened, Cheryl Williams approached the officers and refused their commands to step back.
