County Clerk James L. (Jimmy) Poss appointed to County Officials Association of Tennessee Board

Frank Herndon, Jefferson County Clerk serving as President of the Tennessee State Association of County Clerks (TSACC) has appointed DeKalb County Clerk James L. (Jimmy) Poss to serve a one-year term on the board of directors of the County Officials Association of Tennessee (COAT).
As a board member, Mr. Poss will serve alongside other County Clerks, Register of Deeds, Trustees, and Court Clerks from across the state to govern the organization’s daily activities.
Mr. Poss was selected because of his dedication and the integrity he has shown both as a member of COAT and to the citizens of DeKalb County as their County Clerk. In addition to serving as a board member, Mr. Poss will also serve the TSACC as Chairman of the Motor Vehicle Committee as well as serving on their Legislative, Business Tax, and TWRA Committees.
Herndon said “We are thankful for Clerk’s like Jimmy who put forth extra time and attention to serving our association in addition to their regular daily office duties to improve our offices and the lives of citizens across our great state.”
County wants up or down vote from Alexandria on extension of sales tax agreement

The DeKalb County Commission may be poised to give the mayor and aldermen of Alexandria another chance to extend the town’s existing local option sales tax agreement with the county through the year 2055.
A decision was expected Tuesday night but due to the lack of a quorum, the Alexandria Mayor and Aldermen could not hold its regular monthly meeting to transact any business.
In October, the county commission went on record making a commitment to fund construction of a new Pre-K to 2nd grade school if the four city governments in the county, Smithville, Alexandria, Liberty, and Dowelltown voted to extend their existing sales tax agreements with the county by January 1, 2025 as recommended by the county budget committee. Since then Smithville, Liberty, and Dowelltown have all voted to extend their agreements and the board of education also went on record to join them in support. Smithville made it conditional that the county issue bonds for construction of a new school within 12 months.
During a committee of the whole workshop meeting Thursday night, County Mayor Matt Adcock suggested that the county commission Monday night vote to extend the January 1, 2025 deadline until February 1, 2025 to give Alexandria city leaders more time to act.
“I don’t think its fair that the county and the other municipalities have at least voted on this and then somebody doesn’t. I think we need to hear a yes or no (from Alexandria). We need to hear what they have to say,” said County Mayor Adcock.
Adcock commended the city governments of Smithville, Liberty, and Dowelltown for their support in extending the sales tax agreements with the county in order to help fund construction of a new county school.

During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, the county commission will vote to accept the resignation this week of 3rd district commissioner Susannah Cripps and then begin the process of filling the vacancy in January.
County Mayor Matt Adcock explained during Thursday night’s county commission workshop how the process will unfold.
“How we did this last time, a commissioner has to make a nomination. For this meeting in December, we will vote on her resignation. We will not appoint somebody until the January meeting. I have already heard from three people who are somewhat interested. I told them you need to get the support of a county commissioner and ask them for their nomination for the seat. Any of the 13 commissioners can make a nomination. In January we will open the floor for nominations. Each commissioner can nominate somebody and then we will vote on each nomination until someone gets the appointment by a majority vote of the commission. Anyone who wants to be nominated will be invited to the January workshop on Thursday night to address the commission before the monthly meeting the following Monday night,” said County Mayor Adcock.
The appointee will serve until the expiration of the term on August 31, 2026
