Four Directors of DTC Communications Elected to New Terms

The four incumbent directors of DeKalb Telephone Cooperative (DTC Communications) up for election Saturday won a new three-year term during the annual meeting held at the fairgrounds in Alexandria.

Kathy Pugh of the Auburntown exchange defeated challenger Jason Brown 235 to 133. She had been appointed in January, 2021 to fill her husband Roy N. Pugh’s unexpired term. He passed away in December 2020.

The other three Directors up for re-election were unopposed including James H. Dillard, Jr. – Gordonsville exchange, who received 249 votes; Kurt Bass – Temperance Hall exchange, 234 votes; and David Parker – Woodland exchange, 253 votes.

In addition to Pugh, Dillard, Bass, and Parker, the DTC Board includes members Randy Campbell of the Liberty exchange, Bennie Curtis of the Alexandria exchange, Ronnie Garrison of the Smithville exchange, Terry McPeak of the Norene exchange, Brian Alexander of the Woodbury exchange, and Jim Vinson of the Milton exchange.

The DeKalb County Tigers defeated the Cumberland County Jets with points to spare Friday night at Crossville. The final score was 48 to 13 propelling the Tigers to a 4-1 record overall and a 1-1 mark in the Region. Cumberland County remains winless on the season at 0-5.

Talented Tiger running back Colby Barnes accounted for 4 of DeKalb County’s 7 touchdowns  in the game while quarterback Jordan Parker threw for two TD’s. Jonathan Garcia scored another on a kick return.

DeKalb County will travel to Woodbury Friday night, September 23 to take on their border rival Cannon County at 7 p.m. The Lions are 1-4 this season.

Colby Barnes got the Tigers on the board first with 8:58 left in the 1st period on a 2-yard touchdown run. Kicker Juan Ortega booted the extra point and DC led 7-0.

Tiger Quarterback Jordan Parker threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to John Ellis with 2:31 left in the 1st period and with Ortega’s PAT the Tigers led 14-0.

Cumberland County got points with 8:28 left in the 2nd period on a 35-yard touchdown run by Drayton Hairston. The PAT attempt by kicker Jaime Perez was no good but the Tiger lead was cut to 14-6. The score was set up on a DC turnover as a Cumberland County punt bounced off a Tiger player and was recovered by the Jets at the DC 35-yard line.

Cumberland County then tried an onsides kick, but Tiger Jonathan Garcia grabbed it and raced 52 yards for the score. Ortega tacked on the extra point and DeKalb County extended its lead to 21-6.

QB Parker got his second touchdown throw of the game on a 3-yard toss to Josh May with 22 seconds left until halftime. Ortega’s PAT try was good, and DeKalb County held a 28-6 halftime advantage.

The Jets successfully recovered an onsides kick to start the 2nd half which led to another Cumberland County touchdown. With 11:37 left in the 3rd period, Hairston scored on a 42-yard run. Perez added the extra point to trim the DC lead to 28-13.

Tiger Colby Barnes went on to score three more touchdowns to seal the victory for DeKalb County. With 40 seconds left in the 3rd period, Barnes found the end zone on a 6-yard touchdown run and with Ortega’s PAT the Tigers led 35-13.

Barnes scored on a 14-yard run with 4:42 left in the 4th period and with Ortega’s kick, DC built a 42-13 advantage.

The final touchdown of the game came on an 84-yard scamper by Barnes with 1:45 remaining. The PAT attempt by Ortega was no good but DeKalb County claimed a 48-13 victory.

Evins Mill Road, which has been closed to through traffic from Highway 70 to Pirtle’s Nursery, will reopen for the weekend Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18 but will be closed again for further repairs starting Monday, September 19 from 7 a.m. until?
