Joey Agee Named DCHS Boys Basketball Coach while Cody Randolph will be his Assistant Coach

July 17, 2022
By: Dwayne Page

A new coaching team is now in place to lead the DeKalb County High School boys basketball program.

Joey Agee, Assistant DeKalb West School Principal and former DeKalb Middle School boys coach, will take over from John Sanders, who recently resigned as head coach of the Tigers for an assistant coaching position at Trousdale County while Cody Randolph will join Coach Agee as his assistant coach. Randolph is coming over to DCHS from DeKalb Middle School where he has served as the Saints boys basketball coach for the last eight years. Randolph succeeds former Assistant Tiger Basketball Coach Logan Vance who has taken a job as teacher and basketball coach at Smith County Middle School. Both Coaches Agee and Randolph will teach wellness and physical education at DCHS.

The announcement was made Friday by DCHS Principal Bruce Curtis.

“We have been fortunate enough to find our new boys basketball coach and assistant coach here at home. These two guys are already within the system. They have a lot of background basketball knowledge and they know the kids. We are looking for big things from them. I want to welcome them to this new endeavor,” said Principal Curtis.

“I am excited,” said Coach Agee. “I have been wanting to get back into coaching for a while now because I have missed the game as coach. God saw fit for it to happen at this time and I get to do it with Cody who is a good friend of mine. In fact, we are related. His grandfather and mine are brothers so we have known each other for most of our lives. He took over at the Middle School when I went to the West School as assistant principal, and he did a good job with the Saints. I have a daughter in high school, so I know a lot of the kids and watched them grow up. There is talent here. They are athletic and we have some big kids. I think there is a lot of potential for big things. I am definitely looking forward to working with them,” said Coach Agee.

After graduating from DCHS in 1999, Agee furthered his education at Tennessee Tech where he majored in health and physical education after which in 2003 he became PE teacher and started his head boys basketball coaching career at DeKalb Middle School. Agee earned his Masters in Instructional Leadership degree in 2010. Eight years ago, Agee left DeKalb Middle School to become Assistant Principal at DeKalb West School. He and his wife Casey reside in Alexandria. They have two daughters, Avery, a rising sophomore at DCHS and Jordyn who will soon be a seventh grader at DeKalb West School.

Randolph graduated from DCHS in 2006 and went on to Tennessee Tech where he earned a Physical Education Degree in 2011. The following year Randolph was hired at DCHS to teach wellness and he helped former Boys Basketball Coach Lynus Martin for a year. In 2014 Randolph joined the staff at DeKalb Middle School as PE teacher and Saints Head Basketball Coach. He and his wife Amelia have three boys, Dawson, Corbin, and McCoy.

“I am excited about the opportunity to get to work with Coach Agee. I was going to get out of coaching. I had already resigned from my middle school coaching position, and I felt like the Lord was leading me away from coaching but within a couple of months this (opportunity) opened up. I have coached a lot of these boys here at the high school at the middle school and am thrilled to be able to reconnect with those kids at the high school level,” added Randolph.

Former DMS Saints Assistant Coach Ethan Vanhook will be taking over the head Saints coaching duties. The Lady Saints head coaching position remains vacant with the recent resignation of Coach Loree Hall.

These new reassignments come more than a month after DCHS Lady Tiger Basketball and Tigerette Softball Coach Danny Fish decided to leave DCHS to become head boys’ basketball coach at Warren County. Brandy Alley was later named to replace Coach Fish as Lady Tiger Basketball Coach and Danielle Tyson Horton will take over the Tigerette Program.
