DeKalb Track Athletes set Personal Records

Personal records were set by 6 DCHS track runners over this past week of competition.

Nolan Gottlied threw a personal best of 91 feet 9 inches in the discus and 38 feet 8 inches in the shot put. (Tomahawk Championship April 23rd) He also blazed through the 200m dash with a time of 25.51.

Aaron Gottlied set a PR in the 800m run coming through the finish line in 2:09.05 beating his previous time of 2:09.06. (Tomahawk Championship April 23rd)

Kaleb Spears posted 2 PR’s in the 800m run in 2:15.89 and in the 400m run 56.69 (Cookeville Home Meet April 26th)

Caleb Gray shaved 9 seconds off his 1600m run time with a huge PR of 5:21.95 (Cookeville Home Meet April 26th)

Sam Harris beat his previous 400m time, crossing the finish in 1:06.05 for a new PR. (Cookeville Home Meet April 26th)

Katherine Knowles also set a personal record in the 400m dash with a time of 1:13.38 (Cookeville Home Meet April 26th)

The DeKalb track athletes will compete at Sub-Sectionals on May 3rd at Rhea Co. HS. This will be the first step to qualifying for the TSSAA D1-AAA State Championship meet on May 26th.




Big turnout on last day of early voting for May 3 primaries

DeKalb County’s biggest day for early voting turned out to be the last day on Thursday, April 28 as 284 cast ballots for next Tuesday’s local primaries.

According to the election commission 284 voted Thursday including 276 in person and 8 by absentee. A total of 195 voted in the DeKalb County Republican Primary and 89 in the Democratic Primary.

For the 13 days of early voting combined, a total of 1,909 cast ballots including 1,815 in person and 94 by absentee. In the Republican Primary, a total of 1,247 voted compared to 662 in the Democratic Primary.

Primary election day for both Republicans and Democrats is Tuesday, May 3 from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. at all 12 precincts in DeKalb County. WJLE will have LIVE election return coverage and interviews with the candidates Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.

Starting with this election, those who voted in the past at Dowelltown, Belk, and Edgar Evins State Park, will be voting at different locations.

“I want to remind voters of some precinct changes. Those who did vote at Edgar Evins State Park will now vote on election day at the Temperance Hall Community Center. Those who voted at the Dowelltown Community Center will vote now at the Liberty Community Center and those who were voting at the Belk Community Center will vote on election day at the Keltonburg Community Center,” said Administrator of Elections Dennis Stanley.

Winners of both the Republican and Democratic Primaries will advance to the General Election in August along with independent candidates.




DWS Announces Students of the Month for April and May

DeKalb West School today (April 28) announced the Students of the Month for April and May. Named as top students for April were Lailynn Rice, Pre-K, Lavvy Carver, Kindergarten, Carl Shelton, 1st, Aler Organ, 2nd, Dawson Allcorn, 3rd, Kaden Cameron, 4th, Bella Gonzalez, 5th, Akacia Walker, 6th, Wyatt Young, 7th, and Connor Talley, 8th.

Congratulations are also in order for the May Students of the Month: Dalton Lunsford, Pre-K, Kendyl Atnip, Kindergarten, Shalynn Rice, 1st, Mabry Organ, 2nd, Derek Pinkston, 3rd, Hailey Brown, 4th, Grant Brown, 5th, Lucas Light, 6th, Elliott Nelson, 7th, and Peyton Key, 8th.

Teachers choose students based on academic ability, character, and other traits that highlight them as one of the best at DeKalb West.
