DeKalb Schools COVID Update

The DeKalb County School District reported 17 positive cases of COVID on Friday, October 8, which is up from 8 on Friday, October 1.

The district reported 12 positive cases on Monday, October 4 compared to 7 the previous Monday September 27.

The number of those under quarantine on Monday, October 4 was 33, down from 41 on Monday, September 27. By Friday, October 8 the number was 46 compared to 47 the previous Friday, October 1.

According to Attendance Supervisor Joey Reeder, the DeKalb School District reported 12 positive cases on Monday, October 4 with the numbers at each school as follows: DeKalb Middle School 5, DCHS 3, Northside Elementary 2, Smithville Elementary 2, and DeKalb West School 0. By Friday, October 8 the numbers at each school were as follows: DCHS 6, DeKalb Middle School 4, Smithville Elementary 4, Northside Elementary 3, and DeKalb West School at 0 for a total of 17.

The number of those under quarantine district-wide was at 33 on Monday, October 4. The numbers at each school were: Northside Elementary 9, DeKalb West 8, DCHS 8, Smithville Elementary 5, and DeKalb Middle School 3 . By Friday, October 8 the numbers were: DeKalb West School 12, Northside Elementary 11, DCHS 9, Smithville Elementary 9, and DeKalb Middle School 5 for a total of 46.

Colby Barnes scored three rushing touchdowns and Isaac Knowles had a “Pick 6” to lead the DeKalb County Tigers to a 28-0 win at Warren County Friday night.

The win puts the Tigers at 5-2 on the year while Warren County drops to 1-4.

The next test for the Tigers may be the biggest so far this season as they host Upperman Friday night, October 15. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage. The Bees sport a record of 6-1 and lead the region standings at 3-0.

The Tiger defense stood tall in the game Friday night recording its first shutout of the season.

Barnes scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 7 yard run with 7:37 left in the 1st period. Axel Aranda came on for the extra point and the Tigers led 7-0.

Barnes gave DC a two touchdown advantage with 10:03 left in the 3rd period on a 23 yard run. Aranda added the extra point and the Tigers led 14-0.

Isaac Knowles picked off a Pioneer pass with 1:29 left in the 3rd period and returned it 60 yards for a score. Aranda booted the extra point and the Tigers had a 21-0 cushion.

Barnes got his third and final touchdown of the game with 8:01 left in the 4th period on a 7 yard run. Aranda kicked through the extra point and the Tigers went on to claim a 28-0 victory.

Who makes the best chili in DeKalb County? Find out on Friday, October 22nd when Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County hosts a Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale.

Chili will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the DeKalb Courthouse Lawn. In case of bad weather, the event will be cancelled. A decision will be announced about cancellation by Wed., Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. For a cash donation, eat all the chili you want and vote for your favorite chili and the best decorated booth. Delicious baked goods prepared by members of local churches will also be for sale. Take out is also available.

“We are looking forward to another great day of good food and fellowship at the chili cook-off,” said Alex Woodward, president of Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County. “The proceeds from the Chili Cook-off will be used towards building another Habitat house with a DeKalb County family, so we hope everyone will come out and eat lots of chili for a great cause!”

So far, there are 10 teams competing in the Chili Cook-off this year: “Hot Checks Chili” from Wilson Bank and Trust; “Gas It Up Chili” from DeKalb Market; DeKalb County Officials; First Bank; Smithville Electric System; Adoration Home Health; AMVETS Post 101; Tecia Puckett Pryor, Attorney/Center Hill Title LLC, and Brandon Cox, Attorney.

In 2019, “Pick It or Ticket” from the Smithville Police Department took Top Chili Honors. The Best Decorated Booth Award went to “MTNG-Take a Chance Chili” from Middle Tennessee Natural Gas. The Golden Spoon Award went to “The Courthouse Gang” from the DeKalb County Officials, who raised an additional $180.00 for Habitat in cash donations at their booth. A total of nearly $4,500 was raised during the event.

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
