Community urged to Observe Halloween Trick or Treating Saturday, October 30 Rather than Sunday, October 31

County and city leaders are asking the community to observe Halloween trick or treating on Saturday, October 30 rather than the traditional date of October 31 which falls on Sunday this year.

The joint announcement was made Friday by DeKalb County Mayor Tim Stribling, Smithville Mayor Josh Miller, Dowelltown Mayor Pam Redmon, Liberty Mayor Jason Ray, and Alexandria Mayor Bennett Armstrong.

There is an exception. The 10th Smithville Boo Bash will be Friday, October 29 from 12 noon until 5 p.m.

The City plans to block off streets around the public square starting at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning.

“We will be conducting this event as safely as we possibly can again this year. We encourage businesses to set up outside if possible and parents to incorporate masks into your child’s costume,” said spokesperson Beth Adcock.

During the Smithville Halloween Boo Bash, the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber will be sponsoring the Best Costume Contest and Best Decorations for participating Smithville businesses and offices. To enter, take a picture with your cell phone and send it to 615-464-7760 by 1 PM on Friday, October 29th. Winners will be presented a “Boo Bash” Best Costume or Best Decoration award, local media and social media recognition, winner announcements on the November WJLE Chamber Chat Radio and DTC TV program, and most important – “bragging rights!”

Justin Potter Library will have a Facebook Live Halloween Storytime on Friday, October 29th at 10:00 am. So please join us for a morning of fun. The library will be participating in the Smithville Halloween Boo Bash on the same day from 12 pm until 5:00 pm so come by dressed in your favorite costume because you are in for a treat. Meanwhile the DeKalb County Fair is hosting “Fright at the Fairgrounds” Saturday, October 30. Its normally the annual football season opener for both teams but the DeKalb County Tigers will face the Warren County Pioneers tonight (Friday). Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. in McMinnville and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

The game was originally scheduled for August 20 but postponed due to COVID exposure in the Warren County program and re-set for tonight which would have been a bye week for both teams.

The Tigers enter this non-region game with an overall record of 4-2 while the Pioneers are 1-3.

DeKalb County’s wins have been over Smith County 33-14, Cumberland County 35-10, Cannon County 49-7, and Livingston Academy 45-15. Their losses have been to Macon County 32-29 and Watertown 38-20.
Warren County’s only win has been over Cookeville 21-14. Their losses have been to Mount Juliet 38-20, Sigel 42-12, and Coffee County 33-14.

Although the Pioneers have struggled Tiger Coach Steve Trapp knows his team will need to bring it’s A-game.

“I was really impressed with Braylon Grayson last year especially defensively. He didn’t play a whole lot of offense because of the other guys they had but he is definitely a guy they want to get the football to running the ball and they like throwing it to him as well. They consider their offense the pistol wing-t. They will be in shotgun formation although it’s a tighter shotgun but then they will get in there tight and do other things. They have also thrown some spread formations in there a few times this year. Jaythan Pleasant is a new guy on their roster. He is just a sophomore but he is really a speedy and shifty guy. I don’t think he played last week against Coffee County so I am not sure about his status this week. Their quarterback Nate Elrod is a good guy as well. He has a good arm but they don’t use him that way a bunch with the kind of offense they run but when they have decided to throw he has shown on tape to make some good decisions and he has the ability to throw the ball down field. He is also a threat in the run game as well. In all phases of offense, these guys present some challenges we will really have to be focused on,” said Coach Trapp.

The graduation date has been set for the Class of 2022 at DeKalb County High School.

During Thursday night’s regular monthly meeting, the Board of Education set the date for Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. on the high school football field at the recommendation of Principal Bruce Curtis.

In his monthly report on personnel, Director Patrick Cripps announced that Heather Swingler has been hired as a teacher at Smithville Elementary School and the Kady Moffett has resigned as teacher at Smithville Elementary School. Chelsey Cooksey and Lacey Foutch were granted a leave of absence as requested.
