DCSO and SPD assist Baxter Police in capturing Nashville carjacker
August 7, 2021

An 18 year old suspect in a Nashville carjacking case, who led law enforcement authorities in a two county pursuit from I-40 to Cookeville Highway near Smithville was arrested Thursday after tire deflation devices were put down to get the stolen vehicle he was driving stopped.
18 year old Deyton Farless has been charged by the Baxter Police Department with driving without a license, theft of property, evading arrest, and reckless endangerment.
In a prepared statement, Sheriff Patrick Ray said that “On August 5 at 12:04 p.m. DeKalb County Dispatch received a call from the Cookeville area Tennessee Highway Patrol that Baxter Police were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle out of Davidson County and the driver was supposedly armed. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department also entered the pursuit on I-40 in Putnam County”.
“The pursuit then entered DeKalb County on Cookeville Hwy (56 North) from I-40. The Tennessee Highway Patrol, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and Smithville Police placed tire deflation devices at three different locations on Cookeville Highway near the Smithville City limits,” said Sheriff Ray.
Although the driver (Farless) maneuvered around one of the tire deflators, he was unable to avoid another put down by Sheriff’s Department Officers which disabled and forced the vehicle to stop. Farless and three others in the automobile were taken into custody.
Sheriff Ray and Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins said the tire deflation devices that were purchased this past year have been a great asset to their departments. Having them not only protects the patrol cars funded by the taxpayers, but more importantly, protects the lives of innocent persons including the officers as well as the suspects.

DeKalb Jobless Rate Jumps to 6.2% in June
August 5, 2021
By: Dwayne Page
DeKalb County’s unemployment rate for June was at 6.2%, up from 5.1% in May but well below the rate of 10.9% in June, 2020.
The local labor force for June was 7,748. The number of people working was 7,264 while 484 were without employment.
Each June, Tennessee counties experience an increase in unemployment as schools close for summer break and lay off workers. Recent college graduates entering the workforce for the first time also impact the data each year. Once again this June, data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) showed jobless rates increased in each of the state’s 95 counties.
While county rates increased in June, the statewide rate ticked down. This can occur because county unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted, while the state and national rates use the seasonal adjustment to eliminate outside influences, such as school closures, on the statistics.
In June, unemployment rates were less than 5% in 19 Tennessee counties. Seventy-five counties had rates 5% or greater but less than 10%, and one county showed a rate higher than 10%.
Williamson County recorded the state’s lowest unemployment rate. At 3.4%, the county’s June rate increased 0.7 of a percentage point from the previous month.
Perry County’s rate jumped to 13% in June, a spike of 5.9 percentage points when compared to May’s rate.
The statewide unemployment rate for June decreased 0.1 of a percentage point to 4.9%. That is 4.4 percentage points lower than Tennessee’s rate in June 2020.
Nationally, unemployment increased slightly in June from 5.8% to 5.9%. This rate is down 5.2 percentage points when compared to June 2020.
The state has valuable resources available to help unemployed Tennesseans become TN Work Ready and reenter the workforce. They can visit www.TNWorkReady.com to find online and in-person assistance with their job search.
