Community Unites in the Fight Against Cancer (VIEW VIDEOS HERE)

Caring people from throughout this community gathered at Green Brook Park Friday evening to support the fundraising efforts of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life so that one day friends and loved ones will no longer have to hear the words “you have cancer.”

This year’s Relay for Life was the 22nd annual for DeKalb County and with funds already raised and still more to come in, organizers expect to collect in excess of $40,000. “That will go a long way in funding research. We are very thankful to everybody who had a part in this,” said Iva Dell Randolph, Chairman of the Relay Leadership Team.

“We are really pleased and we appreciate our community and our county so very much. We’ve had people from all over our county here tonight and that is what it is all about. That we come together as a group to show support for our cancer survivors and to remember those who have gone on,” said Randolph.

The evening began with entertainment by Kathy Goodwin and then the presentation of Colors by Boy Scout Troop #347 with Suzanne Slager performing the National Anthem. Local minister Don Rigsby gave the invocation and Renea Cantrell, a member of the Relay Leadership Team welcomed the crowd along with Ms. Randolph.

Cancer survivors in attendance then took center stage to give a personal testimony including Grady Prichard, Norma Scott, Hattie Nickens, Era Billings, Rita Robinson, Dean Griffey, Marlene Delong, Renee Saunder, Jackie Cantrell, Gail Taylor, Kenneth Ray, Martha Melching, Debbie Knowles, Beth Adcock, Loretta Adcock, Wilma Cantrell, Guylene Atnip, Margie Smith, Nancy Cassity, Chizuko Howard, Roy Pugh, Carl Lee Webb, W.J. White, Joyce Boyd, Bonnie Rigsby, and Don Rigsby.

Bonnie Rigsby closed out the opening ceremony with a special song honoring cancer survivors after a special prayer for them.

The cancer survivors then took a lap around the walking trail at Green Book Park bearing their “Survivors Celebrating Life” banner to kick off the event.

Center stage entertainment featured Vonda and Wanda-the Sunshine Singers,Tina Boston, Fluty and Friends, David Turner and Friends, the Duke and Miller Families, Kevin Roberts as Elvis, and Axel Rico and the DeKalb County Ramblers.

The Relay also included lots of food, games, and other fun activities in the park for kids and grown ups alike including a jail for bail and a dunking booth.

Luminaria bags lined the walking track and a group of tiki torches in the park were lit in honor and remembrance of cancer survivors and others claimed by the disease.

State lawmakers paid a call on the DCHS Class of 2019 Valedictorian Madison Cantrell and Salutatorian Megan Redmon Friday afternoon at the high school.

Both Cantrell and Redmon were formally presented copies of resolutions paying tribute to them as adopted in the State House of Representatives and State Senate and signed by the Governor. The presentations were made by State Senator Mark Pody and State Representatives Terri Lynn Weaver and Clark Boyd.

Principal Randy Jennings and Director of Schools Patrick Cripps also attended the observance.

The DCHS graduation is set for Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. on the high school football field. Senior awards night is Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the DCHS gym.

The Resolution honoring and recognizing Cantrell states as follows:

A RESOLUTION to honor and recognize Madison Cantrell, 2019 Valedictorian of DeKalb County High School.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to pay tribute to those students who, through their natural talents and unflagging commitment to academic excellence, have distinguished themselves in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Madison Cantrell is one such exceptional student who was recently named Valedictorian of the 2019 graduating class at DeKalb County High School; and

WHEREAS, through diligent study, steady composure during examinations, and steadfast commitment of time and talent, Madison Cantrell has achieved outstanding academic success and joined the ranks of the best and brightest students in Tennessee and our country; and

WHEREAS, in her remarkable high school career, Madison Cantrell has earned an exemplary grade point average and recognition as a National Merit Finalist while participating in a number of extracurricular activities, including Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, and student government; and

WHEREAS, Madison Cantrell’s display of intellectual aptitude and ambition surely bodes well for her future success; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Cantrell’s noteworthy achievement is a tremendous source of pride for her parents, Todd and Jenny Cantrell, her school, and her community; and

WHEREAS, Madison Cantrell’s dedication to excellence is clearly deserving of the respect, admiration, and commendation of the members of this General Assembly; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED ELEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we hereby commend and honor the 2019 DeKalb County High School Valedictorian, Madison Cantrell, on her impressive academic achievement and extend to her our best wishes for a happy, successful future.

Seventy three students in the L.B.J. & C. Smithville Head Start Program received certificates during a graduation ceremony held Friday at the county complex auditorium.

Parents and other family members and friends turned out for the program which featured the children singing songs including ”Goodbye Friends” and dancing to the recording of “Get Funky”.

Students in each of the four classes wore graduation caps and came to the podium to receive their certificates as their names were called by the teachers.

Director Cathy Shehane read a graduation poem in honor of the students.

“A child is like a butterfly in the wind. Some can fly higher than others, but each one flies the best it can. Why compare one against the other? Each one is different. Each one is special. Each one is beautiful.”
