City to Annex Property off Dry Creek Road for Subdivision Developer

The City of Smithville plans to annex property off Dry Creek Road into the corporate limits.

The aldermen approved an annexation ordinance on first reading during last month’s monthly city council meeting. Second and final reading passage came following a public hearing Monday night. No public opposition was expressed.

The property (parcel 44.00 of DeKalb County Tax Map 64) was recently purchased by Jesus Villa who plans to develop a subdivision. A portion of the 12.18 acre site is in the city but the rest is outside the corporate limits.

According to City Administrator Hunter Hendrixson, Villa came before the Smithville Municipal Planning Commission last summer requesting a favorable recommendation for annexation of the property. The commission granted the request on August 13 subject to approval of the Smithville Aldermen.

A plan of services has been prepared for the property as required by law including police and fire protection, water and sewer services, sanitation, street lighting, and other necessary services.




Parent-Teacher Conferences Coming up Thursday, March 14

Parent-Teacher Conferences are set for Thursday, March 14 from 3-6 p.m. at DeKalb West School, DeKalb Middle School, Northside Elementary School, and Smithville Elementary School.

Parent-Teacher Conferences at DeKalb County High School will be Tuesday, March 19 from 3-6 p.m.

Report cards will be sent home for K-8 students on Thursday, March 14 and for DCHS students on Tuesday, March 19.

Schools will be closed for spring break March 25-29 and for Good Friday, April 19.

The DCHS graduation is Friday, May 17.

The last day of school for the year will be Friday, May 24. Thursday, May 23 will be an administrative day for teachers. Students will not attend. Report cards will be sent home from all schools on Friday, May 24.




Aldermen Adopt Ordinance Updating Zoning Classifications with New Color Coded Map (VIEW PDF OF ORDINANCE AND MAP)

The Smithville Aldermen have adopted an updated zoning classification ordinance with a new color coded map as recommended by the Smithville Planning Commission.

First reading action was taken on the ordinance during a special meeting in January at city hall. Second and final reading action came Monday night following a public hearing. No public opposition was expressed.

According to City Administrator Hunter Hendrixson, the new ordinance is intended to simplify the designations of zoning districts.

The R-1 (low-density residential) districts (single-family dwelling, excluding mobile homes) and R-2 (high density residential) districts (multi-family dwellings) will remain the same. All the R-3 (high density residential) districts will be re-classified as R-2.

B-1 districts (business uses) will be re-classified as C-1 (commercial districts) for small businesses.

B-2 district (central business district) will be re-designated as C-2 (commercial district) for businesses in the downtown area.

M-1 districts (manufacturing uses) will be re-classified as I-1 (Industrial Districts) for light industry uses.

The new color coded zoning map shows the following:
R-1 districts (yellow)
R-2 districts (orange)
C-1 district (pink)
C-2 districts (red)
I-1 districts (purple)
