Smithville Elementary School Recognizes Students of the Month for February

Smithville Elementary is recognizing its Students of the Month for February. These students were selected for their outstanding character, academics, and other traits that make them an all-around excellent student.
Selected as Students of the Month for February are:
PreK- Waylon Sutton, Reece Gard
Kindergarten – Rhett Lack, Bella Camacho Godinez
1st Grade – Kinslee Gay, James Morgan
2nd Grade – Romina Aldino, Francesca Paz

Let and Let Live Homeless Shelter Fundraiser Set for March 16

Helping the Homeless in DeKalb County!
A non-profit organization called “Live and Let Live” will be hosting a fundraiser Saturday, March 16 at the DeKalb County Community Complex with food followed by a gospel singing worship service featuring “Right on Time”.
Food will be served from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and tickets will be sold at the door. Two meal options will be available including $10 dollars for a Fireman One Barbeque plate which will include a barbeque sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw, cookie, and a canned drink or water or a $5 dollar hotdog plate which will include chips, cookie, and a drink.
Tables will be set up during the meal for distribution of general information including ways to donate and volunteer in support of Live and Let Live.
After the meal at 6 p.m. event organizers will provide a brief update on the mission of Live and Let Live and the homeless shelter it operates.
The singing service with “Right on Time” will begin at 6:30 p.m.in the auditorium of the Mike Foster Multipurpose Center. This is intended to be a worship service. There is no admission charge to attend the singing, but donations will be accepted. You are welcome to attend just for the meal, just for the singing, or both.
The goal of Live and Let Live is to help the homeless by providing emergency shelter especially during cold weather where they can get rest, take showers, launder clothing, and access other necessities.
The shelter is located at 656B West Broad Street and is open on a winter schedule every Monday and Saturday from 12 noon until 4 p.m.

Seventh district County Commissioner Appointee to be named March 25

Interested in becoming a member of the county commission from the 7th district?
During the next monthly meeting on Monday, March 25th, the county commission is expected to name someone from the 7th district to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Tim Reynolds.
The appointee will serve on the commission until the August 1, 2024 DeKalb County General Election when someone will be elected to complete Reynolds’ unexpired term which expires August 31, 2026. Anyone interested in being appointed must first be nominated during the March meeting by a county commissioner before a vote is taken on the appointment.
Also in the August 1 election, voters in the 6th district will fill the unexpired term of former county commissioner Justin Adcock who resigned in January. Andy Pack has been appointed by the commission to fill Adcock’s seat until the August election and Pack plans to be a candidate for the position to fill the remaining two years of Adcock’s unexpired term.
County parties may certify candidates for both the 6th & 7th district vacant positions by caucus through the qualifying deadline of 12 NOON April 4, 2024.
Independents may now pick up petitions.
