Another opportunity to help!

Last week, Andy Estes began a local relief effort outside the county complex to collect supplies for hurricane flood victims in North Carolina.

Estes will resume that donation drive Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. until dark with the help of the DeKalb County Clerk’s Office.

County Clerk James L. (Jimmy) Poss said he and his staff will take turns manning the drive during the day assisting Estes until he returns from work. Estes will then deliver the supplies to Cumberland Valley Nurseries in McMinnville to be transported to North Carolina.

Supplies needed include non-perishable food items, peanut butter, crackers, chips, etc., canned food, tuna, chicken, pork n beans, etc., Band-Aids, hand can openers, over the counter medicine, bread, water, salt and pepper, ketchup, sugar, mustard, mayonnaise, etc., tissue, paper towels, sanitary wipes, etc., toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, first aid kits. Please no women’s items, baby food or diapers. The supply of those items is plentiful.

Meanwhile, Salem Baptist Church in Liberty is seeking donations of non-perishable food items to help Storm Victims in East Tennessee. Donations will be collected at Salem Baptist Church in Liberty through October 10th Noon -6:00PM each day at the Fellowship Hall Drive Thru. Pull thru and drop off items just inside the door. Tenneco has a collection site for donations to help with Hurricane Relief. All Donations can be dropped off at Tenneco, 645 East Broad Street, Smithville.

It was a beautiful day for the 20th Annual Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale, held Friday, October 4, 2024, on the town square and the lawn of the DeKalb County Courthouse. Fourteen chili teams participated in the cook-off; over 600 bowls of chili were served; and $10,000 was raised for Habitat for Humanity, which will be used to build the next Habitat house in DeKalb County.

Smithville Electric took Top Chili Honors, with “The Courthouse Gang” from DeKalb County Officials placing second. Third place chili honors went to “Close the Deal” from DeKalb Title.

The Best Decorated Booth Award also went to Smithville Electric; with “The Courthouse Gang” from DeKalb County Officials coming in second place and “Bedrock Chili” from Middle Tennessee Natural Gas placing third.

The Golden Spoon Award went to “Bedrock Chili” from Middle Tennessee Natural Gas, who raised the most additional money for Habitat in cash donations at their booth, with “The Courthouse Gang” from DeKalb County Officials coming in second and Yurezz Home Center coming in third.

Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church donated the largest amount of baked goods earning the first ever “Golden Spatula Award.” DCHS Tiger Bakery was second, and Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church was third. Habitat for Humanity thanks the many churches and organizations who contributed to the largest ever Treat Tent!

Rounding out the participating teams were:“Loan Rangers” from Liberty State Bank; “Secret’s in the Vault Chili” from FirstBank; State Farm Mallory Pfingstler; “Bowled and Beautiful” from Hywater Title, LLC; “Chili Chili Bang Bang” from Wilson Bank & Trust; “DeKalb Dems” from DeKalb County Democratic Party; “Legal Limit Spice” from Center Hill Title, LLC/Tecia Puckett Pryor, Attorney; “Spice Builders” from DCHS FCCLA; and “DeKalb County Farm Bureau Arsonist” from DeKalb County Farm Bureau Insurance.

Habitat for Humanity thanks City Mayor Josh Miller and his staff and County Mayor Matt Adcock and his staff for facilitating the event space; and all the fine local folks who came out to support Habitat and this great community event.

Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. The DeKalb West School Junior Beta Club and Lead Sponsor Leslie Moore inducted the new slate of officers for the school year in a special candlelit ceremony at school September 30.

Elected to serve in the honors and service club were President: Gabe Blair, Vice President: Kaden Mullinax, Secretary: Mia Hall, Reporter: Kate Pistole, and Chaplain: Kaylee Womack. Peers also chose Zane Griffith and Charley Prichard as 7th grade student representatives. President Blair and Vice President Mullinax presented the twenty new Jr. Beta Club members with an official certificate and pin for their achievement.

The twenty-one new members of the Jr. Beta Club are as follows: Paisley Avera, Leah Chittwood, Taelyn Cork, Jace Davis, Kynlee Griffith, Caison Grisham, Cash Hancock, Sawyer Hendrix, Cainnan Humphrey, Holden Leiser, Hailey Medrano, Ivy Melton, Zadah Miller, Karson Mullinax, Jaxon Murphy, Karlee Pierce, Derek Pinkston, Conner Robinson, Turner Stanley, Bradi Turney, Kensley Womack.

Students qualify for the distinguished club based on their academic achievement and character. Congratulations also goes to DWS Jr. Beta Club for being named the 2024-2025 National Beta School of Merit.
