Early Voting Ends Thursday, November 3

A total of 1,854 people has cast ballots in DeKalb County to date with one more day left of early voting for the State and Federal November 8 elections.
Early voting hours on Thursday, November 3 will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the courthouse. The hours for voting at the 12 precincts on Election Day, November 8th are 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The daily breakdown of early voting for this election in DeKalb County is as follows:
Wednesday, October 19- 149 (113 in person and 36 by absentee)
Thursday, October 20- 142 (140 in person and 2 by absentee)
Friday, October 21- 140 (138 in person and 2 by absentee)
Saturday, October 22- 91 (90 in person and 1 by absentee)
Monday, October 24- 122 (110 in person and 12 by absentee)
Tuesday, October 25- 148 (146 in person and 2 by absentee)
Wednesday, October 26- 116 (100 in person and 16 by absentee or assisted living centers)
Thursday, October 27- 215 (152 in person and 12 by absentee in Smithville and 51 in person at the fairgrounds in Alexandria)
Friday, October 28- 160 (152 in person and 8 by absentee)
Saturday, October 29-139 (119 in person and 29 by absentee or NHC Healthcare Center)
Monday, October 31-129 (114 in person and 15 by absentee
Tuesday, November 1-144 (139 in person and 6 by absentee)
Wednesday, November 2- 159 (154 in person and 5 by absentee)
Voters will be making their selections for Governor, Congressman and State Representative and voters in the 4th district only will have a candidate for Constable to fill an unexpired term. In addition, voters will be making their choices on four constitutional amendments.
Fourth District County Commissioners to Host Public Meeting to Hear From Their Constituents

The two representatives on the County Commission of the 4th district, Greg Matthews and Tony “Cully” Culwell, are hosting a community forum especially for their constituents on Wednesday, November 23 at 6 p.m. in the history room of the DeKalb County Complex.
The purpose of the meeting is to keep residents and taxpayers of the 4th district up to date on issues coming before the county commission and to get public input. Both Matthews and Culwell will take questions and listen to any complaints, concerns, or comments you may have.
Although this meeting is primarily for the people of the 4th district anyone in the county may attend as it is an open public forum.
Matthews and Culwell hope this becomes a monthly community event.
DeKalb Prevention Coalition Recognizes Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest Winners

The DeKalb Prevention Coalition has recognized students who participated in a poster contest last week in support of Red Ribbon Week October 23-31.
The theme for this year’s Red ribbon week was “Celebrate Life, Live Drug Free”
DeKalb West School winners:

Students from DeKalb Middle School took the pledge to live drug free.
Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community, and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles.
The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week with the message to choose a healthy lifestyle.
In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena was killed by drug traffickers. Shortly after his death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice.
The first official Red Ribbon Week celebration was created by the National Family Partnership in 1988. NFP continues to coordinate the campaign for families, schools and communities across the nation each year. Since then, the red ribbon has symbolized a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities.
