DeKalb County Democratic Party Presidential Convention March 7th

The DeKalb County Democratic Party will host its Democratic County Presidential Convention on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the DeKalb County High School cafeteria 1130 W Broad St, Smithville, TN 37166, to select representation from the county to attend the District Convention on March 21.

The doors open for registration at 11:00 AM and the convention is open to all registered voters in the county who are supporters of the Democratic Party, have voted in the March 2020 Presidential Primary, and who agree to support the nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2020 Presidential election.

The convention will begin at 12:00 PM when caucuses will be held for the top vote getting presidential candidates in Congressional District 6.

The party welcomes all who wish to participate in selecting Tennessee’s delegates to the Democratic Presidential Convention in Milwaukee the week of July 13, 2020.

The DCHS gymnasium has experienced several renovations and technology upgrades in recent months thanks in part to the financial support of the community and local businesses. The most recent donation came from the DeKalb Junior Pro Basketball Program.

On Friday DCHS Basketball Coaches John Sanders and Danny Fish thanked Matt Quarles, President of the Junior Pro League, for donating funds to purchase new wireless microphones to be used as part of the gym’s public address system.

“This is our way of helping give back to DeKalb County and the DCHS basketball program,” said Quarles.

“Its another upgrade to our facilities here and we really appreciate Mr. Quarles and the Junior Program League for helping us out,” said DCHS Tiger Coach Sanders.

DCHS Lady Tiger Coach Danny Fish said being able to use wireless microphones will be most helpful especially during coaching clinics and school events including pep rallies and academic awards nights.

“Matt and I had been talking for several months about us doing things with Junior Pro and our basketball program. We identified some things and what was the best bang for our buck and decided we needed some new wireless microphones. Junior Pro was able to help us with those needs and that cost and we received the new system about a week ago. We now have one hand held wireless microphone and a hands free head wrap around microphone which we can use anytime we want to do coaches clinics here in the gym which will make it easy for us to walk around and talk. It will not only serve the basketball program but the school as well. It will make it much more interactive for us where we are not having to constantly pull a microphone cord,” said Coach Fish.

“We are very grateful for the help of the DeKalb Junior Pro Basketball Program and others in the community who have helped us this year because we would not have been able to do all these gym renovations without the community. The dream of each kid that plays basketball in the community is to one day play on this floor and in this gym. We want to make the gym as up to date and modernized as possible,” added Coach Fish.

Trying to find common ground.

Members of the DeKalb County Board of Education and the Budget Committee of the County Commission will have a joint meeting next Thursday, February 6 to discuss what can be done to jump start action on a new school construction plan. But since the meeting is only a work session, no action can be taken.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the downstairs courtroom of the courthouse.

The latest plan offered by the Board of Education is construction of two new Pre-K to 8th grade schools and an expansion of Northside Elementary School to a Pre-K to 8th grade complex. To date, the Board has not secured locations for construction of two new schools and the proposed cost estimates of at least $48 million may fall significantly short of what is actually needed to fund such a project.

The board recently sent a request for funding to the county commission but until more specifics are provided, the commission will take no action.

By a 14-0 vote, the county commission Monday night adopted an amended motion by first district commissioner and budget committee chairman Dennis Slager to notify the school board that its request is lacking.

“This request is inadequate and only a detailed project description, total project cost, and other costs that will directly affect the overall school board budget will be considered. The DeKalb County Commission stands ready to consider and fund a school building project that meets the current needs of the county’s school system that is financially feasible and reasonable for the taxpayers of DeKalb County,” said Slager.
