DWS Recognizes September Students of the Month

DeKalb West School announces the Students of the Month for September.  Named to the distinction are Savannah Stanley, Kindergarten; Kayla Sebolt, 1^st grade; Bo Hale, 2^nd grade; Ezzy Moore, 3^rd grade; Autumn Crook, 4^th grade; Hunter Ballew, 5^th grade; Hailey Crotzer, 6^th grade; Daniel Stiffler, 7^th grade, and Gavin Cooper, 8^th grade.  Teachers choose students for Student of the Month honors based on their academic ability, character, and other traits that make them an excellent student.

The DCHS Tigers notched their first win of the season last week at home over Stone Memorial and are hoping to get their first road win tonight as they travel to Watertown. 

Kick-off is at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage on AM 1480/FM 101.7 and LIVE streaming at www.wjle.com with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor and Luke Willoughby. 

Coach Steve Trapp, speaking on WJLE’s Tiger Talk program, said he was pleased with his team’s 33 to nothing shutout of the Panthers, a region opponent, last week. 

“That was an awesome event and an awesome feeling. I thought our guys came out and performed the way we needed them to perform to ultimately get the win. We had not beaten Stone Memorial since the first time we played them back in 2013. They had their way with us in a big way in a few games. With this being a region game, the first one of the year, and them having that streak against us it was good to get that monkey off our back and start district play in the right way and take care of our home turf. The way we played in the second half was really fun to watch and to see these guys excited about getting that victory and be able to share that with them was a good experience,” he said. 

Coach Trapp said Watertown, a better team than Stone Memorial, will pose a tougher challenge for the Tigers.

 “There is a lot of threat there and a lot of different things they will want to do offensively. The last couple of years coming into our game they always had a quarterback banged up so they went to that wildcat formation and we didn’t handle that well. They are still able to do that with their starting quarterback but there are other things they do as well. Athletically they may be a notch higher than they were last year across the board. They have had closer games this year than they have had the past couple of years but it is definitely a step up in competition that what we faced last week. There are certain aspects of this game that will be the biggest challenge we have had this year but there are other aspects that present some great opportunities for us. It comes down to the choices we make as individuals and as a team about how hard we want to pursue excellence and execute what is being asked to do all across the field. We’re just going to play. This is a team that has a lot of confidence with what they have done the last couple of years. They play that way and show that and we have to match that intensity and confidence level with an understanding that if we do what we are capable of doing this will be a great football game and we will have a chance to win this thing,” said Coach Trapp. 

Watertown is 2-1 with wins over Gordonsville 19-13 and Trousdale County 16-13 and a loss at Nolensville 32 to 14. 

The Tigers are 1-2 with losses to Warren County 35 to 21 and to Upperman 35 to 0 and the win over Stone Memorial 33-0.

 WJLE’s Pre-Game shows begin with “Coach to Coach” at 5:00 p.m. featuring former UT assistant coach Doug Matthews with former coach Dave McGinnis and broadcaster Larry Stone talking Tennessee and SEC football. The show repeats this Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. 

“Coach to Coach” is followed by “Murphy’s Matchups at 6:00 p.m., a look at Tennessee High School Football from Murphy Fair with commentary on games and coaches interviews. 

“Tiger Talk” airs at 6:30 p.m. with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor interviewing Coach Steve Trapp and Tiger football players Desmond Nokes, Isaac Knowles, and Axel Aldino. 

The game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. with play by play coverage on WJLE.

The DeKalb Saints recognized the 8^th grade football players, managers, and cheerleaders Thursday evening on 8^th grade night before playing host to Macon County.

The Saints lost the game 34 to 16 slipping to 2-4 on the season and will host Cumberland County next Thursday night, September 19 at 6:30 p.m.

*Abby Cross is the daughter of Tony and Shelly Cross. She has been a football manager for 2 years. Her future goal is to work in the field of labor and delivery.

*Ansley Cantrell is the daughter of Tony and Amee Cantrell. She has been a football manager for 1 year. Her future goal is to become a neonatal nurse.

*Ellie Dillard is the daughter of Lance and Courtney Dillard. She has been a DMS football cheerleader for 2 years. Her future goal is to attend the University of Tennessee and become a district attorney.

*Wil Farris is the son of Bruce and Kathy Chapman. He has been on the DMS football team for 2 years and plays on the offensive line and at defensive end. His future goal is to keep playing sports.

*Ally Fuller is the daughter of Anthony Fuller and Amanda Fuller. She has been a DMS football cheerleader for 3 years. Her future goal is to attend the University of Tennessee and become a nurse practitioner. She hopes to play basketball in college and be a part of the NCA staff.

*Trace Hamilton is the son of Lynda Hamilton. He has been on the DMS football team for 2 years and plays on the offensive line and at linebacker. His future goal is to join the Navy and major in criminal justice.

*Aaron Hatfield is the son of Jeremy and Jennifer Hatfield. He has been on the DMS football team for 1 year and plays as an offensive and defensive lineman. His future goal is to pursue a career in sports or become a lawyer.

*Chloe Lawson is the daughter of Victoria Poteet and Adam Denney. She has been a DMS football cheerleader for 3 years. Her future goal is to go to college and become an orthodontist. She would also like to travel the world.

*Jade Mabe is the daughter of Barry and Lisa Mabe. She has been a DMS football cheerleader for 3 years. Her future goal is to go to Tennessee Tech University and become a physical therapist.

*Austin Nicholson is the son of Steve and Amy Reed. He has been on the DMS football team for 1 year and plays wide receiver and defensive back. His future goal is to get a scholarship.

*Bryce Stembridge is the son of Latosha Stembridge. He has been on the DMS football team for 1 year and plays as an offensive and defensive lineman. His future goal is to get a scholarship to play football and major in engineering.

*Caley Taylor is the daughter of Brandon and Shayna Taylor. She has been a football manager for 1 year. Her future goal is to become a cosmetologist.

*Briz Trapp is the son of Brad and Kim Trapp. He has been on the DMS football team for 2 years and plays quarterback and linebacker. His future goal is to play sports.

*Elaina Turner is the daughter of Shane and Regina Turner. She has been a DMS football cheerleader for 3 years. Her future goal is to attend the University of Tennessee and become a dermatologist. She would also like to play softball in college and be a part of the NCA staff.

*Ari White is the son of Jimmy and Adria White. He has been on the DMS football team for 2 years and plays running back and linebacker. His future goal is to get a scholarship to play football in college and major in business.

*Konner Young is the son of Jeremy and Kim Young. He has been on the DMS football team for 2 years and plays as an offensive lineman and linebacker. His future goal is to play baseball in the major league.
