Don’t Be Surprised to See Low Flying Planes in the Smithville Area Today (Saturday)

If you should spot low flying planes today in the Smithville area don’t be alarmed.

According to Joe Johnson, Smithville Airport Manager, a professional aerial cover crop seed sowing operation is underway today on behalf of farmers in the area.

A 48 year old man charged with breaking into two automobiles and a shed last summer has been granted probation for lesser offenses.

Gregory Eugene Neal appeared in DeKalb County Criminal Court on Friday October 5 and entered a plea to charges of attempted auto burglary and theft under $1,000. He received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days in each case to run consecutively but he will be on supervised probation. Neal must make restitution of $1,065 to the victims in the case.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Thursday, August 24, 2017 Neal allegedly entered a black Ford Ranger, a red Chevy Blazer, and a shed on Adcock Cemetery Road and took property valued at $990.

The case was investigated by detectives of the Sheriff’s Department.

In other cases, 45 year old John William Cline entered a plea to theft under $1,000 and a 3^rd offense of driving on a suspended license. He received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days in each case to run concurrently with each other but consecutive to a Warren County case against him.

44 year old Darrell Luis Salinas entered a plea to sale of a schedule III controlled substance and received a sentence of three years all suspended to TDOC probation. He was fined $2,000 and given credit for 128 days of jail time served

23 year old Evan Brady Cripps entered a plea to sale of a schedule VI drug and received a sentence of two years on TDOC probation. He was fined $2,000. The term is to run concurrently with a Putnam County sentence against him. Cripps must make restitution of $400 to the sheriff’s department jointly and severally with a co-defendant.

55 year old James Howard Markham entered a plea to a fourth offense of driving under the influence and received a two year sentence as a range one offender to serve at least 30% but the term has been suspended to 150 days of time served. The sentence is to run concurrently to other cases against him in Sumner County.

39 year old Tara Campbell entered a criminal information plea to driving under the influence and received 11 months and 29 days on probation except for 48 hours to serve in the county jail. She was fined $350 and will lose her license for one year. She was given jail credit of 34 days and must attend an alcohol safety school.

The window of opportunity for the DeKalb County Tigers to make the state play-offs narrowed with a 20-17 loss at Macon County Friday night at Lafayette.

After an open date next week, the 2-7 Tigers will host the 1-7 Cumberland County Jets in Smithville in the regular season finale on Friday, October 26. A win for the Tigers would put them in the play-offs as the 4th place team in this region.

In the game Friday night, Macon County got on the scoreboard first with 27 seconds left in the 1st period on a 30 yard field goal by kicker Ryan Underwood.

DeKalb County’s Andrew Fuson tied the game on a 33 yard field goal with 5:17 left in the 2nd period.

Macon County took the lead again with 37 seconds before halftime on an 8 yard touchdown pass from John Mark Gammons to Landon Whitmore. Underwood added the PAT and the score was 10-3.

A Hail Mary pass from Axel Aldino to Grayson Redmon on the last play of the half for a would be tying touchdown was wiped off due to an illegal procedure penalty and Macon County held its 10-3 lead through half time.

DeKalb County had an opportunity to draw closer in the 3rd period on a 44 yard field goal attempt by Andrew Fuson but the kick was no good.

The DC Tigers scored their first touchdown of the game on a 1 yard plunge by Quarterback Axel Aldino with 7:58 left in the game. Fuson booted the extra point and the game was tied at 10-10.

Macon County jumped back out front 13-10 with 5:02 left on a 30 yard field goal by Ryan Underwood and later stretched the lead on a 5 yard touchdown pass from John Mark Gammons to Chris Oliver. The PAT by Underwood was good and Macon County led 20-10.
