A State Senate Joint Resolution honoring DeKalb County High School Class of 2018 Valedictorian Allison Maynard and Salutatorian Marshal Evins has been introduced in the Tennessee General Assembly by State Senator Mark Pody

The resolutions are expected to be adopted by both the State House and Senate and signed by the Governor.

The Resolution honoring and recognizing Maynard states as follows:

“WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to pay tribute to those students who, through their natural talents and unflagging commitment to academic excellence, have distinguished themselves in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Allison Maynard is one such exceptional student, who was recently named Valedictorian of the 2018 graduating class at DeKalb County High School; and

WHEREAS, through diligent study, steady composure during examinations, and steadfast commitment of time and talent, Ms. Maynard has achieved outstanding academic success and joined the ranks of the best and brightest students in Tennessee and our country; and

WHEREAS, in her remarkable high school career, Allison Maynard earned an exemplary grade point average while participating in numerous extracurricular activities, including Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Science Club, Literature Club, and Spanish Club; and

WHEREAS, excelling in the athletic arena, Ms. Maynard played on the softball team and was a member of the football cheerleading team, which she served as captain; and

WHEREAS, her display of intellectual aptitude and ambition surely bodes well for her future success; and

WHEREAS, Allison Maynard’s noteworthy achievement is a tremendous source of pride for her parents, Stacey Smith and Alan Maynard, her school, and her community; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Maynard’s dedication to excellence is clearly deserving of the respect, admiration, and commendation of the members of this General Assembly; now, therefore,

WHEREAS, Marshal Evins’s noteworthy achievement is a tremendous source of pride for his parents, Dub and Edie Beth Evins, his school, and his community; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Evins’s dedication to excellence is clearly deserving of the respect, admiration, and commendation of the members of this General Assembly; now, therefore,

With the recent arrival of a new fire truck, the City of Smithville will soon be selling the oldest fire engine in the fleet and it may go to the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department.

City officials conducted an opening of sealed bids Thursday afternoon at city hall on the sale of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department’s 1992 truck.

Two bids were received.

The DeKalb County government had the highest bid at $30,000 and a total bid on behalf of the City of Alexandria was $28,770 which included $27,270 by the town government plus $1,500 by the Alexandria Firefighters Association.

City officials will recommend that the county’s bid be approved when the mayor and aldermen meet in regular monthly session Monday night, April 2 at 6 p.m. at city hall.

The county already has funding in place to purchase the truck from a USDA Community Facility Grant of $15,000 with a $28,000 local match for a total project amount of $43,000 which is budgeted in the county’s capital projects fund. The grant was approved in April 2017 for firefighting equipment, protective gear, and other resources. County Mayor Tim Stribling filed for the grant with the approval of the county commission. In August, 2017, the county received approval for a second USDA grant of $16,000 also with a local match.

In January, the city received a new Pierce Impel PUC Rescue Pumper, which is a combination fire engine/rescue vehicle. The new truck cost the city $751, 575.

In addition to the new fire truck, the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department has two others, a 2001 model along with a 2012 ladder truck.

A reception in honor of longtime DeKalb County High School Basketball Coach Lynus Martin will be held on Sunday, April 15 at the DCHS gymnasium from 2-4 p.m.

The reception will be hosted by members of the DCHS basketball team and their parents.

Martin recently announced his resignation after sixteen years as head coach of the Tiger basketball program.

All former players and their families are urged to attend to express support and well wishes for Coach Martin. A scrapbook of photos, newspaper clippings , and other memorabilia from Coach Martin’s sixteen year coaching career is being prepared to present to him. Please bring along any mementos you may have to contribute to the scrapbook.
