13-year-old Noah Goebel, Grand Champion Fiddler at the 51st Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree and Crafts Festival will be playing Saturday, January 28, 2023 at the Ryman Auditorium.

The Elkton, Kentucky resident, who also won the Junior Fiddling contest here, beat out the Senior Fiddling Champion Heather Brown Currie of Springfield in the showdown for the Berry C. Williams Memorial Award. Currie claimed the Grand Champion Fiddling Title in 1999 and 2001.

As the 2022 Grand Fiddle Off Champion, Goebel will be playing both shows- 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on Saturday – a ‘fiddle tune’ for the Opry square dancers LIVE performance. Darrin Vincent suggested this date to Dan Rogers. It is a Bluegrass Night with Dailey & Vincent also performing.

“Noah is one very impressive young man. He is very talented, and the Jamboree Committee is so proud that he is representing us at the Ryman – The Mother Church of Country Music” , said Jamboree President Kim Luton.

In 2021, Goebel competed as a child in the James G. “Bobo” Driver Fiddlers Jamboree’s National Championship for Country Musician Beginners and won the Beginners Fiddling Title.

Noah stated “I’m honored to be playing the Opry at the Ryman this weekend. I am so grateful for the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree, Darrin Vincent, Dan Rogers and all who made this possible. ”

Prisoner Caught in Jail with Letters Laced with Suboxone

A female prisoner at the DeKalb County Jail was recently caught with letters laced with Suboxone.

33-year-old Cassandra Renee Reed of Foster Road, McMinnville, is charged with bringing contraband into a penal institution. She is under a $20,000 bond and will make a court appearance February 2.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that between January 12 and 19, Reed received two letters at the jail which appeared to have been soaked in a substance, believed to be the schedule III drug Suboxone, before being dried and written on. Phone calls were recorded regarding the letters, between Reed and a man discussing the need for her to obtain the letters before her being transferred to another facility. A detective from the Sheriff’s Department spoke with Reed, who admitted that the letters laced with Suboxone were sent to her by the man with whom she had spoken on the phone. Her plans were to chew on the letters to get the drug into her system. The letters were sent to the TBI Crime Lab for testing.
