City Creates Diagonal Parking Spaces on West Walnut Street

October 7, 2020
By: Dwayne Page

Diagonal parking has come to West Walnut Street in the downtown business district with Market Street soon to follow.

The change on West Walnut Street was made last week.

Last January the aldermen voted to change parking on one side of both West Walnut and West Market Streets from parallel to diagonal parking. The move is not difficult since both are already one way streets. Mayor Josh Miller said the idea is to create more parking spaces for downtown shoppers to help businesses thrive and flourish.

West Main, which is a two way street with parallel parking, will remain as is with no changes planned.

Smithville Alderman Beth Chandler was officially sworn into office Tuesday morning at City Hall.

City attorney Vester Parsley administered the oath. Members of Chandler’s family were on hand for the occasion along with Mayor Josh Miller.

Chandler was appointed by the aldermen Monday night to fill the unexpired term of former Alderman Gayla Hendrix who resigned last month to become Smithville Municipal Judge. Hendrix’s Alderman term ends August 31, 2022.

Meanwhile Alderman Shawn Jacobs was sworn into office Monday night. He was re-elected to a new term in August. Jacobs was scheduled to take his oath last month along with fellow Aldermen Danny Washer and Jessica Higgins but he could not attend in person at that time for the ceremony. Jacobs has served as Alderman since 2009.
