Alexandria Alderman Election Set for August 6

Three persons have picked up a petition to seek an alderman term in the Alexandria Municipal Election on Thursday, August 6.

The latest is Bridgette Rogers who plans to seek a two year term. The other two are Charles Anderson and Lynne Dickerson who will each be running for a four year term.

Five aldermen positions will be filled in Alexandria during the August election.

Tuesday, March 3 is election day.

The Tennessee Presidential Preference Primaries will be held across the state for both the Democratic and Republican parties while locally the DeKalb County Democratic Primary will be held along with a primary for a special judgeship election.

Voters will be going to the polls to select their preference for President, the Republican nominee for Criminal Court Judge Part II, and the Democratic party nominees for Assessor of Property and Constable in 6 of the 7 districts.

Polls across DeKalb County will be open Tuesday, March 3 from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. WJLE will have LIVE election return coverage Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.

A total of 689 people in DeKalb County have already cast ballots during the early voting period from February 12-25

There are 2 Republican and 6 active Democratic candidates  for President still in the race.

The following candidates listed here will be on the March 3 ballot along with several others not listed here who have already dropped out:

Democratic Primary Ballot
• Joseph R. Biden
• Michael R. Bloomberg
• Tulsi Gabbard
• Amy Klobuchar
• Bernie Sanders
• Elizabeth Warren

In addition, the Republican Party selects its delegates to the GOP National Convention and there are 29 at-large candidates with all but five committed to President Donald Trump and voters can vote for up to 14 of those candidates. There are eight 6th district delegate candidates with all but two committed to Trump. Voters can vote for up to three in that race. The Democratic Party chooses its delegates by a different method.

Republican Wesley Bray is unopposed in his bid to fill the unexpired term for Criminal Court Judge Part II District 13. No candidate qualified on the Democratic side.

Locally, Democrat Tom R. Duggin is unopposed in his bid to be the party’s nominee for Assessor of Property on March 3. By caucus, the Republican Party chose Shannon Cantrell to be its nominee in August. Both Duggin and Cantrell will be running against each other in the DeKalb County General Election on August 6.

Six constables are unopposed in their bid to represent the Democratic Party for Constable. They are Waylon Kyle in the 1st District, Darrell Johnson in District 2, Paul Cantrell in District 4, Mark Milam in District 5, Jason Brown in District 6 and Johnny King in District 7. No Democratic candidate qualified in District 3. The Republican Party, by caucus, chose Travis Bryant as its Constable nominee in District 3.

The written word jumped off the pages of literature into real life as around 400 folks turned out for the 5th Annual Family Literacy Night at DeKalb West School Thursday night (February 27).

“I would say that this year’s event was a success!” says School Librarian and Event Coordinator Amanda Mullinax. “Students and families alike seemed to have a wonderful time. Excitement was evident on the faces of many. The faculty and staff at DWS put on another wonderful event; their creativity and love for their students was truly obvious!”

The two main antagonists from Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat” book, Thing 1 and Thing 2, worked together on a cake walk that brought in the crowd as did Literacy Makerspace, and EnForce the Love of Reading. Capture the Flag and Minute to Win It also were popular with the crowd.

“The younger ones seemed to enjoy Mother Goose and her nursery rhyme friends as well as the Mouse and his games,” says Mullinax. “Platform 9 ¾ from the Harry Potter book series was a huge hit for a quick photo op!”

In addition this year, community volunteers DeKalb County 4-H Agent Leigh Fuson and Lisa Cripps and Jennifer Matthews with the DeKalb Prevention Coalition joined in the celebration.

D.W.S. started Family Literacy Night in 2015 because the school knew the value of students beginning literacy skills from a young age.

“The DWS faculty and staff knows that children need literacy instruction from birth; they can’t wait until they are of school age to begin,” Mullinax says. “We also know that hosting a night where learning is fun can ignite or further fuel a love of learning.”

The school librarian also emphasizes that developing literacy skills can come “in many shapes and sizes” including having real conversations with children, reading to them and reading with them, having literature available in the home and encouraging its use, welcoming questions about words they hear or read that they don’t understand, and playing word games at home or in the car as you travel.

“I would personally like to say thank you to all the families that took time out of life’s hustle and bustle to visit with us for our 5th Annual Family Literacy Night,” Mullinax says. “This giving of your time is one way to show your loved ones that you care for them and support them.”

Students in PreK-8th grade entered the 2020 Literature Fair, which took a different turn this school year. Unlike past years, this event gave students the opportunity to combine Social Studies, Science, and Literature into one project.
