Lady Tigers Open District Season with Win, Tigers Lose to Dragons

The DCHS Lady Tigers opened their district season with a win Friday night at home beating the York Institute Dragonettes 66 to 52. The Dragons beat the Tigers 68 to 52.

In the girls game, DeKalb County led 17 to 8 after the 1^st period, 37 to 26 at halftime, and 52 to 38 after the 3^rd period before notching the win 66 to 52.

Kadee Ferrell scored 23 followed by Emme Colwell with 19. Lydia Brown and Joni Robinson each with 8. Kenzie Frace 4 and Maddison Parsley and Mya Ruch each with 2 points.

Meanwhile the Dragons led the Tigers 16 to 11 after the 1^st period, 40 to 21 at halftime, and 58 to 36 after the 3^rd period before going on to claim a 68 to 52 victory.

Dallas Cook and Nathan Atkins each scored 9. Hayden Thomas and Evan Jones each scored 8. Brayden Howard, Josh Carlton, and Dakota White each with 4 and Colter Norris, Noah Martin, and Luke Jenkins each with 2 points.

The Lady Tigers improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the district. The Tigers are 1-5 and 0-1 to start the district race.

Karen Fowler, Regional Manager for Advanced Correctional Healthcare presented a “Life Saving Award” to DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department correctional officers and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on Friday, November 30, 2018.

On July 27,2018, inmates at the DeKalb County Jail alerted nearby correctional officers that another inmate was experiencing seizure-like activity. Correctional Officer Chris Singleton and Correctional Officer Jordan Whitehead responded to the patient’s holding cell.

The officers immediately moved the patient off his bunk and placed him on the floor. Nurse Christina Arnold, LPN for Advanced Correctional Healthcare, arrived at the patient’s cell where she evaluated the patient and determined he was not breathing and did not have a pulse. Nurse Arnold, with assistance from Officer Singleton, began CPR. During this time, Correctional Officer Justin Bass called for DeKalb Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and brought an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to the patient. Nurse Arnold and Officer Singleton delivered one shock to the patient and continued CPR until EMS arrived.

When EMS arrived, they delivered 3 more shocks to the patient and then loaded the patient into the ambulance where the crew continued to attempt resuscitation. Inside the ambulance, the patient did re-gain pulse, became responsive, and began speaking with the EMS crew and officers who were still with him.

“It is with great respect, that I present Nurse Christina Arnold with the “Golden Stethoscope Award” and this certificate. Thank you for all you do for Advanced Correctional Healthcare. Nurse Arnold could not have succeeded in saving the patient’s life had it not been for the assistance of Officer Chris Singleton, Officer Justin Bass, and Officer Jordan Whitehead. I am pleased to present this “Life Saving Award” for the outstanding actions to these officers for their heroic actions that day. Thank you for the continued partnership with Advanced Correctional Healthcare,” Fowler concluded.

Sheriff Patrick Ray also commends his correctional officers and Nurse Arnold for their lifesaving efforts. “I am very proud of our correctional officers and Nurse Arnold for their quick response to the medical needs of this inmate. This is the type of event that we hope to never have, but it’s exactly why we train and educate our officers to be prepared to initially respond to such medical emergencies in the jail. I also want to recognize the DeKalb EMS crew that continued patient care and was part of this successful outcome. Prior to this recognition by Advanced Correctional Healthcare, we took the opportunity to recognize these three correctional officers during an employee meeting we had in August.

Our department is proud of the working relationships we have with all the employees of Advanced Correctional Healthcare, especially the Nurses here at the Jail. All of them go the “extra mile” for us and the inmates here at the jail,” said Sheriff Ray.

Donny Green, County Executive Director of the DeKalb/Cannon County Farm Service Agency, reminds DeKalb and Cannon County eligible voters in Local Administrative Areas (LAA) # 1 (DeKalb County) and # 5 (Cannon County) that Monday, December 3 is the deadline to return election ballots. If ballots are returned by mail, they must be postmarked by December 3, 2018. If they are delivered to the office in person, they must be delivered by 4:30 p.m. December 3, 2018.

Randall West and Jimmy Womack are candidates nominated for LAA # 1 (DeKalb Co.). Both candidates have been certified as eligible candidates. Randall West is currently completing his first 3-year term on the DeKalb FSA County Committee. Both Mr. West and Mr. Womack operate beef cattle farms in the Jacobs Pillar community.

Robert “Bob” Melton is the only candidate nominated for LAA # 5 (Cannon Co.). Bob has been certified as an eligible candidate. Mr. Melton is a retired Cannon County vocational agriculture teacher and operates a livestock farm in the Hollis Creek area of Cannon County. Bob is completing his first 3-year term on the DeKalb/Cannon FSA County Committee.

Write-in nominations can be accepted on ballots. However, the write-in nominee must meet eligibility criteria and attest to his or her willingness to serve, if elected, by signing a nominating petition. Agricultural producers were encouraged to submit candidate names during the nomination period that ended August 1, 2018.

To be an eligible voter, farmers and ranchers must participate or cooperate in FSA programs.  A person who is not of legal voting age but supervises and conducts the farming operations of an entire farm can also vote.

Eligible voters in DeKalb County LAA # 1 or Cannon County LAA # 5 who did not receive a ballot can obtain a ballot at their local USDA Service Center. The DeKalb/Cannon FSA County Committee will meet on December 4, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. to canvass and tabulate the ballots. This meeting is open to the public. The newly elected committee member and alternates take office January 1st, 2019.
