Smithville Elementary School Salutes Local Veterans (VIEW VIDEOS HERE)

Smithville Elementary students and teachers paid tribute Thursday morning to the brave men and women who have served our country in honor of Veterans Day during an assembly program in the lunchroom.
Local veterans seated on the stage were treated to children singing songs in honor of each military branch of service as well as “God Bless the USA” and “I love America” under the direction of Ms. Gates Craighead. A music video by Dailey & Vincent called “Unsung Heroes” was shown to open the program.
Anita Puckett, interim Principal, said the purpose of the assembly was to honor veterans and instill in these children at an early age the importance of the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the service of our country.

“Boys and girls this is a very special day at Smithville Elementary. In fact its probably one of my favorite celebrations that we recognize each year. I know you may not truly understand the value of this day but I hope here at SES we are planting a seed for your future appreciation of these men and women, our present and future soldiers. These men and women did something most cannot do such as the act of sacrifice. Sacrifice is the offering of one’s self for a higher purpose. That purpose is for our freedom. Boys and girls you are very fortunate that you were born in America, home of the free and land of the brave. Freedom although taken for granted by many, much was sacrificed and today we honor and we recognize those who sacrificed much,” said Puckett.

Adrienne McCormick read the following “Veterans Day” poem by Cheryl Dyson:
“On Veterans Day we honor all,
Who answered to a service call,
Soldiers young, and soldiers old,
Fought for freedom, brave and bold
Some have lived, while others died,
And all of them deserve our pride,
We’re proud of all the soldiers who,
Kept thinking of red, white, and blue,
They fought for us and all our rights,
They fought through many days and nights,
And though we may not know each name,
We thank ALL veterans just the same.”

DeKalb West Pays Tribute to Veterans

The sixth grade classes at DeKalb West School paid homage to the men and women in the nation’s military for Veterans Day.
Students of Tammy Payne and Jessica Antoniak made patriotic drawings and letters that they are giving to the veterans of DeKalb County for the November 11th holiday.
“Thank you for all you do, the blood and sweat dropped, [and] the freedom you have blessed upon us,” Grant Buterbaugh wrote in his letter. “In the blizzards, sandstorms, and strong waters you gave me freedom. Your services will be rewarded with glory in all aspects. Our country has depended on you, and you made a good decision to serve.”
“Thank you for your service to the United States of America,” writes Christian Hale. “You are a true hero to our dear country. We will always remember you in our hearts. You mean so much to us and our country. We know that we can always trust you.”
“Thank you for your service and your honor to America,” writes Tryton Hartle. “You are an inspiration to us all. Your courage and boldness in your service has given us hope. Your honor and bravery is a light to honor the values of America.”
“Thank you for your service and honor toward America,” writes Haley Murphy. “You have fought or are still fighting for our country’s freedom, and sacrificing your life for the United States of America. It seems like you are fearless, and you are our hero.”
“We thank you for fighting for the freedom of our country,” Kenson Moss wrote. “Your services have cost you much sacrifice. The United States is safe because of your bravery and the blood that was shed. You did the heroic heed for America. When people look at the flag, they think of the things you’ve done for our country and home.”

Police Stop Motorist Twice Within Minutes for Driving on Revoked License

A man stopped twice within eighteen minutes by Smithville Police for driving on a revoked license will soon be making two court appearances for the offenses.
31 year old Kenny Waymon Dyal Jr. of 159 Floyd Drive was cited and then arrested on November 2 for driving on a revoked license. Police stopped Dyal in the parking lot of Mapco Express after spotting him operating a vehicle on South Congress Boulevard knowing his license were revoked due to failure to comply with financial responsibility. While the officer was writing the citation, Dyal had a licensed driver in the vehicle with him get behind the wheel. But the officer also heard Dyal say to his passenger that he planned to resume driving once the officer left. Eighteen minutes later police spotted Dyal driving again and stopped him but this time he was taken into custody and charged with the offense, rather than being issued another citation. Bond for Dyal is $3,000 and his court dates are November 29 and December 6.
52 year old Keith O’Brian Jeffries of 475 Hodges Road was cited for simple possession on October 18. Police were informed of possible drug activity behind a building on South Congress Boulevard after hours and upon making contact with the suspect, Jeffries, police found that he had in his possession a needle loaded with a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. His court date is November 8.
22 year old Christopher Ronald Cameron of Liberty was arrested on October 19 for driving on a suspended license. Police spotted Cameron operating a motor vehicle on the roadway and knew that he had a suspended license for accumulation of points. Cameron was taken into custody without incident. His bond is $3,500 and his court date is November 8.
49 year old David D Anderson of Liberty was arrested on October 20 for stop/halt/frisk, and possession of a schedule V controlled substance. He was also cited for driving on a suspended license. Police spotted Anderson at the car wash on East Broad Street and knew he had active warrants against him. As the officer approached to speak with him, Anderson took off running and led police on a short foot pursuit before being arrested a short time later. Anderson had in his possession 69 yellow capsules identified as Gabepentin for which he had no prescription. Anderson’s bond is $3,000.
56 year old Edward L. Burns of 1081 Smith Road was arrested on October 20 for driving under the influence and he was cited for speeding. Burns was pulled over for speeding and as the officer approached the vehicle he could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Burns’ speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot. Edward submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. His bond is $1,500.
39 year old Jessie Comer Harris of Dowelltown was arrested on October 23 for criminal trespassing. Police observed Harris at City Walk Apartments after an officer had informed him on September 20 not to be on the property by order of the landlord who claims Harris had made threats to a juvenile. Bond for Harris is $2,500 and his court date is November 8.
36 year old Michael Eugene Lattimore and 33 year old Amanda Kay Lattimore of 530 Miller Road, Apartment 4 were cited on October 24 for possession of drug paraphernalia. Police went to the residence to serve a warrant on a man and found that he had 3 hypodermic needles on his person. After Amanda Lattimore informed police that she lived there they requested and obtained consent to search the premises. In the bathroom, officers found Michael Lattimore in possession of several hypodermic needles and a spoon used for illegal drug activity. Police also found on Amanda Lattimore hypodermic needles along with several marijuana and meth pipes. They will make a court appearance on November 8.
Six days later on October 30 Amanda Lattimore was cited for two counts of simple possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. While on routine patrol a police officer spotted a man standing in the parking lot of 530 Miller Road and thought he had warrants against him. The officer stopped and spoke with the man and noticed that he had a yellow substance in his nostrils but after checking with Central Dispatch the man was cleared and released. Lattimore, who was with the man in the parking lot was also questioned by police. Knowing that Lattimore used meth, the officer asked if she had anything illegal on her. She then handed him 2 hypodermic needles, a small baggie which had approximately 0.1 gram of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, and 3 white pills identified as Gabepentin. She had no prescription for the pills. Her court date on these charges is November 29.
44 year old Randall Tittle of 1105 Earl Avenue was cited for shoplifting and simple possession on October 30. Police responded to a shoplifting call at the Dollar General Store where Tittle was spotted stealing merchandise and concealing it down his pants. He then left the store before police arrived and went next door to Save-A-Lot. Officers found Tittle in a restroom at Save-A-Lot and during a search police recovered the stolen merchandise from him along with 14 tan capsules believed to be Gabapentin and 1 round green pill believed to be Clouazepam for which he had no prescription. His court date is November 15.
39 year old James Cary Hicks Jr. of Liberty was arrested on November 3 for public intoxication. Police were dispatched to 920 South Mountain Street, trailer 6 in response to a complaint of a suspicious person behind the trailer. Upon arrival the officer found Hicks who appeared to be intoxicated. Hicks’ speech was slurred and he was very belligerent. Hicks was asked to stand up but he had trouble standing without assistance. Due to his level of intoxication, he was taken into custody after being determined to be a danger to himself and the public at large. His bond is $1,500 and he will make a court appearance November 15.
