DCHS Tigers Headed to State Play-Offs After Grounding Jets 42-0

The DeKalb County Tigers grounded the Cumberland County Jets 42-0 Friday night in Smithville and will advance to the State Play-Offs next week.

With the win on Senior Night the Tigers conclude the regular season at 3-7 and 1-3 in Region 3 Class 4A finishing in 4^th place.  The Tigers’ opponent in the 1^st round of the play-offs will be Maplewood, the 1^st place team from Region 4.

The Tigers scored their first touchdown of the game with 6:25 left in the 1^st period on a 4 yard run by Desmond Nokes, capping a 64 yard drive. Andrew Fuson tacked on the extra point and DeKalb County led 7-0.

The next score came with 55 seconds left in the 1^st period on a 15 yard touchdown run by David Bradford, completing a 62 yard drive. Fuson added the extra point and the Tigers led 14-0.

Bradford scored on a 23 yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the 2^nd period capping a 99 yard drive. Fuson booted the extra point and DeKalb County led 21-0.

The Tigers tried to extend their lead before halftime but a 41 yard field goal attempt by Fuson was no good.

Tre Ladet scored on a 1 yard touchdown run with 6:33 left in the 3^rd period. Fuson’s extra point was good and DeKalb County led 28-0.

After recovering a Cumberland County fumble on a kick-off at the Jets 34 yard line, the Tigers mounted another scoring drive. Ladet took it in from 7 yards out with 4:45 left in the 3^rd period and Fuson’s extra point gave the Tigers a 35-0 lead.

With 1:37 left in the 4^th period Grayson Redmon caught a 12 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Axel Aldino. Fuson added the extra point and the Tigers won 42-0.

The 15^th Annual Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale, held Friday, October 26,  2018, at the DeKalb County Community Complex was another great success!  According to the Chili Cook-off Committee, approximately 400 bowls of chili were served, friends and neighbors enjoyed lunching together, and $4,400 was raised for Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County, which will be used towards the building of the 6^th Habitat house, currently underway.

“The Courthouse Gang” from the DeKalb County Officials took Top Chili Honors, with the newcomer team from the Smithville Police Department placing second. Third place chili honors went to “Just Good Chili” from The Inn at Evins Mill.

The Best Decorated Booth Award went to “Power House Chili” from Smithville Electric System, with “DC Health Dept. Heartburn Defenders” from the DeKalb County Health Department coming in second place and “MTNG Clubhouse Chili” from Middle Tennessee Natural Gas placing third.

The Golden Spoon Award went to “The Courthouse Gang” from the DeKalb County Officials, who raised an additional $225.00 for Habitat in cash donations at their booth.

Rounding out the ten participating teams were “The Bean Counters” from Janney & Associates; “Hot Checks Chili” from Wilson Bank and Trust; “First Bank’s First Chili” from First Bank; and “Loan Rangers” from Liberty State Bank;

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County thanks each of these teams for their enthusiasm and support of the event; all those who donated the delicious baked goods; County Mayor Tim Stribling and his staff for facilitating the event space; and all the fine folks of the community who came out to support Habitat and this great community event.

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. DCHS Tiger Basketball Coach John Sanders is about to begin his first season here and he is excited about the challenge.

The DeKalb County High School Basketball season begins for the Tigers on Tuesday, November 13 as they host Pickett County in a Hall of Fame game.

A native of Smith County, Coach Sanders comes to DeKalb County after having served as an assistant boys basketball coach at Murfreesboro Oakland High School. He and his wife Kristen Oldham Sanders are expecting their first child in December. Coach Sanders is also teaching physical education at DCHS.

After graduating from Smith County High School in 2005, Sanders furthered his education at Tennessee Tech where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 2009 in Exercise Science, Physical Education and Wellness. In 2015, Sanders earned his Master’s Degree in Sport Management.

As for his coaching career, Sanders has served as assistant coach at Gordonsville Junior High School. Gordonsville High School, Smith County High School, Trousdale County High School, and at Murfreesboro Oakland High School.

His head coaching stints have been at Jim Satterfield Middle School at Hartsville from 2010-12, Smith County Middle School from 2012-14, and Smith County High School from 2014-17.
