Tigers Looking to Extend Winning Streak Against Cannon County

The DeKalb County Tigers have not lost to the Cannon County Lions in football at Woodbury since 1966 and are hoping to keep that streak going as they meet their border rivals tonight on the road.

DeKalb has won 10 straight against the Lions, last losing to them in Smithville in 2007. The Tigers lead the All-Time series 28-5-1.

Both teams enter tonight’s game with identical 2-3 records.

The Tigers opened the season with a 19-14 win at home over Warren County but lost to Upperman 43 to 0 at home, 35-0 at Stone Memorial, and 48-14 at home against Watertown. DeKalb County got back in the win column last week with a 28-6 victory at Grundy County.

Cannon County has wins against Red Boiling Springs 47-6 and at Jackson County 41-0. The Lions have lost three straight against Sequatchie County 42 to 13, Moore County 20 to 19, and at Upperman 49-0.

Tiger Coach Steve Trapp said this game should be a good one.

“Its going to be a great atmosphere for football and any time DeKalb County and Cannon County get together it means a lot because its a border rivalry. They do look different than they have in the past. You can really tell their coach has them organized. They have a scheme on offense and defense. Their guys are buying into it and are playing hard. They have our full attention and always do no matter what the record. Its going to be a fun football game out there tonight,” said Tiger Coach Steve Trapp.

Kick-off will be tonight at 7 p.m.

The new county commission will meet for the first time in regular monthly session Monday night, September 24.

The first item of business will be to name a chairman and chairman pro temp of the commission. That is done every September.

While the county mayor traditionally is selected to be the chairman of the commission, anyone from the legislative body may serve in that role. If the county mayor is not the chairman, he has veto power over decisions made by the commission, although the commissioners have the authority to override a veto.

In other business, the commission will receive a monthly report on local option sales tax collections from the county mayor. Budget amendments will be considered for approval. Action is expected on the Sheriff’s Department’s employee handbook policy and procedures as well as the DeKalb County Correctional Facility Medical policy and procedure handbook and Judicial Commissioner appointments. Committee appointments will be made and a tourism update will be given from Chamber Director Suzanne Williams. Notaries will be approved.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Monday night in the downstairs courtroom of the courthouse. WJLE plans LIVE coverage.

DeKalb County High School has transformed its library to a media center with the addition of a makerspace.

Funded by a $10,000 grant, the makerspace transitions the school library from a traditional setting to a more modern learning environment providing students the opportunity to explore creativity and enhance critical thinking skills through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In the makerspace, students have the ability to create things using 3D printers, Robotics, virtual reality technology, and more. A multitude of materials are available for students to explore and innovate on their own terms expanding the library’s reach beyond being merely a place where books are housed to a full-service learning, research, and project space.

(VIDEO BELOW SHOWS School Board member Shaun Tubbs observing students in the DCHS media center/library/ makerspace operating robots “Linda” and “Terry” from Ipads. The robots can be made to talk, move their heads, and move across the floor. The demonstrations show students how robotics can be used for fun as well as for industrial use in factories.

School administrators hosted a luncheon and Ribbon Cutting Thursday at DCHS to make the formal announcement of the new makerspace and to show it off to business, government, and civic leaders of the community.
