Police Officer Sustains Abrasions While Trying to Keep Disorderly Man Off Busy Highway

A Smithville Police Officer sustained minor abrasions recently while trying to keep a disorderly suspect from running into the middle of traffic on West Broad Street

38 year old Nathan Joseph Wilbert of 318 Wade Street was charged on Wednesday, July 11 with disorderly conduct and resisting stop, frisk, halt, arrest or search. Police received several calls that a man, Wilbert was dancing in the road and yelling at motorists on West Broad Street. Upon arrival officers observed an angry Wilbert throwing his arms up in the air and clinching a black sharp metal object like a knife. After refusing to heed officers’ verbal commands to drop the object, one of the officers tried to tase Wilbert but missed. Wilbert then began running toward traffic on West Broad Street but an officer grabbed him by the waist to keep him from getting struck by an oncoming car. During the struggle both the officer and Wilbert fell to the ground. Police took Wilbert into custody and retrieved from him the metal object, which turned out to be a metal paint scraper. The officer sustained abrasions on each knee and was treated later by EMS. Bond for Wilbert is $8,500 and his court date is August 9.

45 year old Lisa Michelle Roller of McMinnville was arrested on Sunday, June 24 for a second offense of driving under the influence and she was cited for violation of the implied consent and open container laws. According to Police, Roller was involved in a two vehicle crash and while speaking to her they noticed that her speech was slurred and an odor of an alcoholic beverage was on her breath and person. Roller was unsteady on her feet and she wouldn’t answer simple questions. In plain view inside her vehicle was an open Bud Light beer and 4 unopened beers in the passenger floor board. Officers were informed that she had consumed two beers. Roller initially consented to several field sobriety tasks but she would not follow instructions on the first task and then refused to perform any other task requested of her. Roller was placed under arrest for DUI. She refused to submit to the implied consent law. Her bond is $3,000.

28 year old Kevin Martrell Addison of 318 Bell Street was arrested on Sunday, June 24 for two counts of aggravated assault and attempted aggravated burglary. On Saturday, June 23 officers were called to the victim’s residence on Bell Street due to a domestic complaint. Upon arrival police were informed that Addison had grabbed the hair of his victim, thrown her on the floor, and then tried to strangle her. Marks were visible on the victim’s neck and arm. The following day Sunday, June 24 officers were again summoned to the residence where Addison was attempting to make entry. Upon arrival officers found Addison at the rear door of the home trying to gain entry. He was also in possession of a .40 caliber pistol with a loaded 10 round magazine and a flat head screwdriver. By that time, the victim had already secured warrants and an order of protection against Addison from the Saturday incident. Addison was taken into custody without incident. His bond is $50,000.

29 year old Brandi Leigh Whittaker was cited for theft of property on Sunday, June 24. Police said Whittaker had taken some items from packages at the Dollar General Store and placed them in her pockets with the intent to deprive the business of its merchandise.

39 year old Mackie Dawn Chandler of 905 West Main Street was cited for simple possession on Monday, July 2. Police were called to Wilson Bank & Trust to speak with Chandler who was complaining about being followed. The officer offered to give Chandler a ride to East Side Inn so she could get a room for the night. During the conversation Chandler informed the officer that she had a small amount of Ice on her person and she handed him a container that held approximately 0.5 grams of a crystal like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

50 year old Matias Perez Maclovio of 586 Colvert Lake Road was arrested for public intoxication on Tuesday, July 3. Police were approached by an individual at Mapco Express who told them that a man in the store appeared to be under the influence. The informant said the man was unsteady on his feet and he could barely stand. The officer confronted the suspect outside the store and could smell an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. The man, Maclovio appeared to be having trouble standing because he kept leaning on another vehicle in the parking lot. Maclovio was taken into custody for his safety and that of the public. His bond is $3,000.

40 year old Isabelle Maria Vazquez Morales of 975 Bright Hill Road was arrested on Sunday, July 8 for domestic assault. According to the warrant Morales physically assaulted her victim, leaving marks on his chest, back, and face. Bond for Morales is $1,500 and her court date is July 26.

31 year old Robert Lee Damron of 504 South College Street was arrested on Sunday, July 8 for domestic assault. According to the warrant, Damron had been physically assaulting his victim for the previous couple of days by punching her multiple times in the back and throwing her into walls of the home. The victim had multiple bruises on her back consistent with someone having punched her. Damron’s bond is $3,500.

41 year old Thornton Wesley Elmore of Knoxville was cited for simple possession and violation of the open container law on Wednesday, July 11. Police were dispatched to a reckless driver call on East Broad Street and spotted the suspect’s vehicle parked at Smithville Wine & Spirits. As the officer walked up to the vehicle, he observed in plain sight approximately half a gram of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and an open alcoholic Twisted Tea can in a cup holder inside the automobile. Elmore’s court date is August 9.

36 year old Tommy Jerome Bates of 848 Foster Road was arrested Friday, July 13 for public intoxication. Police were called to Evans Manor Apartments where a man was reported to be disturbing other residents there. Upon arrival police spoke with the man, Bates who became very loud and belligerent toward the officers. While talking to Bates the officers could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. According to Police, Bates was annoying others in the general area and he was taken into custody without incident. Bond for Bates is $1,500 and his court date is August 16.

Four participants will be competing for the DeKalb County Fair Lip Sync battle tonight (Friday night)

16 year old Caiti Milligan of Smithville, 15 year old Levi Driver of Liberty, 9 year old Kalyee Kent of Smithville, and 49 year old Billie Ann Tubbs of Smithville battled in the first round Monday night and will return for the finals tonight (Friday night)

The winner will receive the Lip Sync Battle trophy and $250 cash. The First runner-up will get $150 cash and the second runner up will take home a $50 cash prize. The audience decides the winners.

Antique Tractor Pull at 7 p.m. and a Super Tractor and Truck Pull on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the T.C. McMillen arena.

Toddler Show at the Lions Club Pavilion at 6 p.m. followed by the Lip Sync Battle Finale and Gospel singing Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Horseshoe Tournament Saturday at noon at the barn or grandstand area

Elvis impersonator tonight at 6:30 p.m. followed by Dessa Ray at 7:45 p.m on Memory Lane Stage and Donny Barthelemy on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. followed by Jesse Claxton at 7:45 p.m.

Cash drawings will be held each night at 9:30 p.m. at the Lions Club Pavilion.

Twenty three babies from one day to twelve months old were in the spotlight during the annual Baby Show held Thursday evening at the DeKalb County Fair.

The winners (blue ribbon first place and red ribbon runner-up) are as follows:

*Girls (Birth to 3 months)
