DeKalb Awarded Phase 35 Food and Shelter Funds

County Mayor Tim Stribling announces that DeKalb County has been selected to receive $8,280.00 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. This is the second consecutive year that Dekalb County has been selected to receive these funds.
The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA; and, United Way of America. The local board charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
A local board made up of community representatives will determine how the funds awarded to DeKalb County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) have an accounting system, 3) practice nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.
The EFS Local Board will meet in the lower courtroom of the DeKalb County Courthouse at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018 to consider applications for funding. Applications must be delivered to the DeKalb County Senior Center in Smithville by 1:00 p.m. that day or may be brought to the meeting by a representative, who is welcome to present the application to the Local Board.

DCHS Class of 2018 to take “Senior Walk” at SES & DWS (VIEW VIDEOS FROM 2017 HERE)

Graduation is a week from Friday for DCHS seniors but next Thursday, May 17 members of the graduating class will take a “Senior Walk” down memory lane, returning to Smithville Elementary and DeKalb West Schools where they once attended.

The seniors will stroll the halls of the schools in their caps and gowns as the elementary students look on. It will give the soon to be graduates a chance to reminisce, see their former teachers, and to inspire the youngsters to follow in their footsteps.

The first ever DCHS Senior Walk was held last year and is now expected to be a yearly tradition for each graduating class.
DeKalb Farmers Market Opens Saturday, May 12

Farmers Markets are a Tennessee tradition. Consumers can find almost anything their heart’s desire from fresh fruits and vegetables to fresh flowers and crafts.
The DeKalb County Farmers Market opens for the season this Saturday, May 12 and will be open every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. until noon.
“Although we’ve been a bit behind schedule this season due to the early spring freezes, we’re anxious to get started and the first weekend promises to be an exciting one,” said Connie Tjarks.
“Be sure to stop by because we plan to have some lettuce and onions as well as vegetable plants and herb plants. You’ll also find Jean’s delicious fried pies and Roy’s barbeque. And the best thing about the Farmers Market is that it offers a different variety of locally grown and organic goods each week. We’ll be looking for you this Saturday at the DeKalb County Farmers Market located on East Bryant Street next to DeKalb County Ace Hardware and the County Complex,” added Tjarks.
