Tiger QB Suffers Injury in DC’s 21-0 Loss to Owls

August 25, 2023

The DCHS Tigers lost to the visiting Smith County Owls 21-0 in the first home game of the regular season Friday night in Smithville, but they lost more than that with perhaps a season ending injury to their starting senior quarterback Briz Trapp who was carted off the field in the second period.

DC was already without the services of two other senior playmakers, Malachi Trapp and Marquez Chalfant, who were injured the previous week.

With the loss the Tigers are now 0-2 and will have to regroup quickly as the Livingston Academy Wildcats will be coming to town next Friday night, September 1. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

The Wildcats will see action twice next week. After building a 24-12 lead over Whites Creek at home with less than 2 minutes remaining until halftime Friday night an isolated thunderstorm with strong winds knocked out power in all of Livingston. After waiting it out, the schools agreed to finish their final 25 minutes of action on Monday at 6:30 pm. The Wildcats lost their season opener at home to Trousdale County 9-0 on August 18.

Meanwhile here at home, the Owls scored their only touchdown of the first half Friday night with 2:12 left in the 1st period on a 63-yard pass play from Riley Martin to Jermaine Cason. Javier Gaspar booted the extra point and Smith County led 7-0.

The Tigers threatened to score late in the 2nd period but a turnover inside the Owls’ 5-yard line stopped the drive.

Smith County went up by two scores with 49 seconds left in the 3rd period as Martin hooked with up Cason again, this time on a 20-yard pass play capping a 51-yard drive. Gasper connected on the PAT and the Owls led 14-0.

The final score came with 5:02 left in the 4th period on a 54-yard touchdown run by Ethan Madewell and with Gaspar’s extra point, the Owls would claim a 21-0 victory and snap a four-game losing streak to DeKalb County.

DCHS student found with phone text messages threatening to carry out a school shooting

Another school threat has been discovered unrelated to the one which came to light Thursday night and this time an arrest has been made.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said 18-year-old Austin Ray Light of Maynard Road, Liberty, a student at DeKalb County High School was summoned to the DeKalb County Jail Friday morning where he was charged with reckless threaten act of mass violence-school property/activity. Light is under a $5,000 bond and his General Sessions Court date is September 9.

According to Sheriff Ray,” Late Thursday night, law enforcement received an anonymous tip about a student at DeKalb County High School having messages on a telephone possibly related to violence. Immediately the Chief Deputy and a detective with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office worked throughout the night to investigate the threats. On Friday morning, law enforcement officials arrested Light. Throughout the investigation law enforcement officials found messages in the phone belonging to Light talking about shooting someone due to him being upset over a test,” said Sheriff Ray.

The arrest warrant states that “On or about the 24th day of August, 2023, Austin Ray Light did make a threat of violence while on the property of DeKalb County High School. Light did use text communication stating “I am gonna kill someone, the only reason I showed up today was to do the test, and it was pushed back to tomorrow”. Light did admit to making these threats.

Sheriff Ray stressed that this arrest is unrelated to the incident Thursday night in which two teenage boys in North Carolina phoned in a school shooting threat to a local Dollar General Store as a prank.
