Kids from Kindergarten to 8th Grade Learn Basketball Skills during DCHS Tiger Camp

The DCHS Tiger basketball camp returned last week at DeKalb Middle School after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. About 120 boys and girls from kindergarten to 8th grade participated to learn basketball skills and fundamentals.

The camp was led by DCHS Basketball Coaches John Sanders and Danny Fish and Assistant Coaches Logan Vance and Maddison Parsley. Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball players served as camp counselors.

“I think all the kids worked hard and had a great time. I had a K-2 group and Coach Vance was over the 6-8th grade group. Coach Sanders took the 3-5th grade group. It was co-ed so we had boys and girls in the camp. We’re just thankful to have had this much community support for our program,” said Coach Fish.

“We taught skills, fundamentals from defense to offense including ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, steals, man, zone, and more. This was really just a skills camp. Of course, with different age levels there were different skills so we taught different things to different kids,” added Coach Fish.

“We had a really good turnout,” said Coach Sanders. “You could tell the kids were really eager to get here and learn and compete and that is what we like to see. It was for kids entering kindergarten to kids entering 8th grade. For four hours each day we worked on some skills that are really vital to be able the play the game of basketball. The very first day we spent a lot of time working on dribbling, pivoting, passing, and shooting form and things like that and the kids got to play basketball games every day during the last hour. The younger kids had fun and for them it was really about getting the feel of the basketball in their hands and learning how to catch, dribble and not be afraid of the ball,” added Coach Sanders.

The DeKalb County Schools Art Exhibit will be Today (Saturday, May 28) featuring works of local art students. The annual event, sponsored by the Smithville Study Club, will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard. The public is invited to attend.

“The Art Exhibit features art from any student from five years of age and older in our county including home schooled students. Two students will be chosen to receive the “People’s Choice” K-8 and 9-12 awards. All students who attend the exhibit will receive a color certificate and ribbon,” said Art Chair Susan Hinton.

After six seasons, DCHS Tigerette Softball Coach Danny Fish is stepping down in that role to devote more time to his family. However, Fish will remain the head coach of the DCHS Lady Tiger basketball program, a position he has also held for six years and will continue as a physical education teacher. Danielle Tyson Horton, who has worked with Coach Fish as an assistant softball coach, has been named to succeed him as head coach.

Coach Fish said the demands of coaching the back-to-back sports of girls basketball and softball each year have cut down on his family time over the years and with his son about to move from the middle school to the high school, he would like to have more free time to watch him play sports as a parent.

“My son Devin will be in high school next year and he is a two sport athlete. He plays basketball and he will play baseball so it was time for me to step away from one of the sports as a coach to be a parent. I couldn’t imagine being on the softball field and Devin playing a home game and not being able to watch him regardless of if he is playing or not. I also have a daughter Karah who is seven years old and I want to be more involved with her too. It was a tough decision for me but I am a father first,” said Coach Fish.

In his resignation letter to DCHS Principal Bruce Curtis, Coach Fish wrote “ Six years ago when I was asked to take over this historic program and follow in the footsteps of Legendary Coach Danny Bond, I never thought we would be able to do so much in such a short period of time. I have always felt being the Coach of the Tigerette program was a privilege and honor. Our staff has tried our best every day to give our student athletes the best experience possible. Have we fallen short some? Absolutely. Have we gotten back up and tried to get better? Every day. Because of that mentality our program has made great strides over the past six years from fundraising, to field renovations, played in the most prestigious tournaments and last but not least the team and player accomplishments”.

“Thank You to the parents, administration, community sponsors and local media for believing and committing to our vision for the program. We have all had a part in making these last six years memorable. We have given the athletes the opportunity to go places they have never been before from Orange Beach to the Starplex . Thank you for helping us give these athletes a little slice of big time”.

“Most of all thank you to the players. Thank you for your patience, work ethic, sacrifice and persistence. Thank you for loving my family like your own. Your willingness to do these things gave us an opportunity to reach our goals together. I will be forever thankful for your trust in the mission and the vision we set together”.

“I am very thankful for my last ten years in the Tigerette program. We have had an amazing run over the past decade including three State tournaments appearances, six district championships, five regional championships, thirteen college signees, and an overall softball record of 108-63. With that being said I believe it is time for me to make a change. I believe the program is turnkey ready for the next staff and I look forward to watching the program grow,” wrote Coach Fish.
