Teen charged after firing Orbeez gun at others from his vehicle

Smithville Police have charged a teen with aggravated assault after he fired and struck others with gel balls or pellets from an Orbeez gun from his vehicle. No one was seriously injured.

18-year-old Brandon M. Lee of Foster Road was arrested on May 1 for two counts of aggravated assault. According to Police, Lee allegedly shot 2 people with an Orbeez gun from a vehicle on April 30, hitting the driver in the neck and the passenger on the chin, leaving whelps on them. The incident occurred at the intersection of East Broad Street and North Congress Boulevard. Lee was charged with another count of aggravated assault for a separate incident the same day in which he drove through the parking lot of Wal-Mart, pulled up to the victim, and shot him in the back of the head with an Orbeez gun. Lee then showed the weapon to the victim and drove away. Bond for Lee is $20,000 and his court date is May 26.

Orbeez are a soft, non-toxic, biodegradable gel balls that can be shot with special gel blaster guns available for sale in most department store toy aisles. However, law enforcement said the tiny balls shot at a high speed from a toy gun can cause eye injuries. Orbeez guns used in this manner are often part of a TikTok trend whereby users fire gel pellets at random and record their reaction.

47-year-old Jimmy Mason Page of Old Snow Hill Road was arrested on April 29 for public intoxication. Police were summoned to Walker Drive where a man was believed to be intoxicated and laying in the woods. Upon arrival the officer saw the man, Page without a shirt laying in a briar patch. Page was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred and his actions erratic. Due to his condition, Page was taken into custody for his safety and that of the public. Bond for Page is $3,000 and his court date is May 12.

30 year old Jamie Ray Furge of Williamson Circle was arrested for DUI on April 30. While on patrol, officers discovered a vehicle at Sunco on East Broad Street with a man passed out in the driver seat and the engine still running. The man was awakened and identified as Furge. While speaking with him, the officer noticed that Furge smelled of alcohol and that his eyes were watery and his speech slurred. Furge submitted to but performed poorly on sobriety tasks. Bond for Furge is $1,500 and his court date is May 26.

65-year-old Steve Mitchel Redmon of Miller Road was arrested on May 3 for a third offense of driving under the influence and driving on a suspended or revoked license. He was also cited for violation of financial responsibility. Police responded to Miller Road due to an auto accident in a parking lot and upon arrival learned that Redmon had moved his automobile to another parking spot after running into a vehicle. Redmon was still in his vehicle when police arrived. The officer spoke with Redmon and confirmed that he had caused the accident and then moved his vehicle. According to Police, Redmon’s speech was slurred, his eyes were blood shot eyes, and he smelled of alcohol. The officer also learned that prior to the incident Redmon had stopped by Center Hill Wine & Spirits on his way home and began drinking. Redmon handed over to the officer a half empty bottle of alcohol. A computer check revealed that Redmon was driving on a revoked/suspended license and he had no insurance. Bond for Redmon is $6,500 and his court date is May 26.

75-year-old Philo Ornaldo Nichols of Andrew Street was cited on May 4 for vandalism. According to Police, Nichols intentionally slammed the driver side door of his vehicle several times into the victim’s truck thinking she had parked too closely to his automobile even though, police said there was plenty of room to exit his own vehicle. The court date for Nichols is May 26.

Jeanna Lucinda Boner of Wade Street was cited for theft of property on May 4. According to Police, at approximately 3:00 am, Boner could be seen on surveillance camera taking several plants and shrubbery from Griffin’s Fruit Market without permission. Some of the items were recovered and returned to owner. Her court date is May 12.

39-year-old Jessica French Hale of Jennings Lane was cited on May 5 for criminal trespassing. Police were called to Wal-Mart where Hale was inside the store after being ordered previously to keep away. Hale’s court date is July 14.

It’s all about the waves!

“Oceans of Possibilities” is the theme for the 2022 Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries Summer Reading Program and children of all ages are invited to participate June 2-23 at 2 p.m. each Thursday at the DeKalb County Complex Theatre Room. All events for both libraries will be at that location.

Mr. Bond’s Science Guys will be at the opening party to kick off the fun-filled summer by teaching kids about waves including waves of the ocean, sound waves, and even light waves. Discover how scientists use the ocean to create energy, laugh out loud when they change the waves of your voice, and be amazed at the destructive power of concentrated light waves.

Children can begin registering for Summer Reading at both libraries on May 23rd. Each child that registers and meets their goal will receive a participation certificate and other goodies at the end of the Summer Reading Program.

Members of the Smithville Church of Christ will be rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to help show their Christian love for others during the congregation’s annual Work Camp scheduled for June 13-16.

The Work Camp is an annual home rehabilitation/beautification project organized by the Smithville Church of Christ. The church began the Work Camp as a means of helping less fortunate residents of the county do some fix up and cleanup projects around their homes.

“We are not professionals but we have a few people really skilled at carpentry. We can’t come in and remodel your house but if something is wrong we are glad to look at it to see if we can do something. We have fixed holes in floors and ceilings. We build a lot of wheelchair ramps for folks. We do brush cutting, tree trimming, gutter cleaning, pressure washing, mowing, weed eating, and other things to improve the outside of your property,” said spokesperson Casey Midgett.

The Smithville Work Camp concentrates its efforts in the Smithville-DeKalb County area. If you would like to have your home considered for the project, contact the church at 615-597-4159 by Friday, June 10 to acquire an application and release form. The church is located at 520 Dry Creek Road, Smithville. Applications are also available at local banks.
