Former DeKalb County Democratic Party Chair Jordan Wilkins was re-elected as Chairman of the Tennessee Democratic County Chairs Association Sunday October 3, 2021. Wilkins was unopposed for a second two-year term and will continue hold a seat on the Tennessee Democratic Party State Executive Committee representing the Tennessee Democratic County Chairs Association.

The DeKalb County School District reported 8 positive cases of COVID on Friday, October 1 as the numbers overall continue to trend downward from previous weeks.

The district reported 7 positive cases on Monday, September 27 compared to 11 on Monday, September 20.

The number of those under quarantine on Monday, September 27 was 41, down from 88 on Monday, September 20. By Friday, October 1 the number was at 47.

According to Attendance Supervisor Joey Reeder, the DeKalb School District reported 7 positive cases on Monday, September 27 with the numbers at each school as follows: DCHS 2, Northside Elementary 2, Smithville Elementary 2, DeKalb Middle School 1, and DeKalb West School 0. By Friday, October 1 the numbers at each school were as follows: DeKalb Middle School 3, Northside Elementary 3, DCHS 2, and Smithville Elementary and DeKalb West School each at 0.

The number of those under quarantine district-wide was at 41 on Monday, September 27. The numbers at each school were: DeKalb West 11, DCHS 10, Northside Elementary 7, Smithville Elementary 7, and DeKalb Middle School 6. By Friday, October 1 the numbers were: Northside Elementary 11, DCHS 10, DeKalb West School 10, Smithville Elementary 9, and DeKalb Middle School 7.

The district reported 6 absences among the staff on Friday, October 1 due to positive cases or quarantine, down from 14 on Friday, September 24. The numbers were as follows: DCHS 3, DeKalb Middle School 1, Smithville Elementary1, and the Transportation Department 1.

Church of Christ at Keltonburg  Fall Gospel Meeting

The Church of Christ at Keltonburg invites you to their Fall Gospel Meeting October 10-13. Sunday services include Bible Study at 10 a.m., Worship at 11 a.m. and Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday night services will be at 7 p.m. A fellowship meal will follow the Sunday morning services. The speakers will be Jon Simmons on Sunday morning, Justin Reed on Sunday evening,  Drew Milligan on Monday evening, Alan Northcutt on Tuesday evening, and Jon Simmons on Wednesday evening. DeKalb Soil Conservation District to host Public Meeting
Every year the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) seeks public comment on how NRCS farm bill programs are administered in conjunction with DeKalb County Soil Conservation District. The County SCD will be holding an open forum on Friday, October 15th at 10:00 a.m. at the County Complex History Room. Also attending will be Johnny Barnes, the County Ag. Agent. Agricultural producers and concerned citizen of DeKalb County are invited to the meeting to give input as to what priorities NRCS should give to addressing resource concerns for 2022. Alexandria Old Timers Day

The Town of Alexandria will host Old Timers Day Saturday, October 16 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the public square.

Board of Education to Meet
The DeKalb County Board of Education will meet in regular monthly session, Thursday October 7 at 7 p.m. at the DCHS Cafeteria. A work session will be held prior to the meeting at 6 p.m. The agenda is as follows: Consider and act on 2nd reading of school board policies; Consider and act on the DCHS Graduation date for the Class of 2022; Personnel report; Committee and School Reports.

Smithville Mayor and Aldermen to Meet
The Smithville Mayor and Aldermen will meet in regular monthly session Monday, October 4 at 6 p.m. at city hall. The agenda is as follows: Adoption of new International Building Codes; Discussion of proposed splash pad at Greenbrook Park; Mayor to give status report on various City projects.

Evans Family Reunion Canceled
The Evans Family Reunion will be canceled again this year due to COVID. Everyone stay safe and they hope to see you next year.

Blood Assurance Drive October 5th
A Blood Assurance drive is set for Tuesday, October 5th. The blood drive will be from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. outside in the parking lot of the Family Medical Center in the bloodmobile. Remember to eat a good meal, drink additional water, and avoid energy drinks and bring a photo ID. Blood Assurance is doing the COVID Antibodies Screening. Donors can now download the BA App and answer their health questions prior to coming to the bus. Just download “bloodassurancequickscreen” and answer the questions to the end hit DONE day of the blood drive. This will save you 10 minutes on the bus. All donors will be given a “Fall Into Adventure” MUG and entered into a drawing for a 2021 Side-by-Side ATV. Blood Assurance is the sole blood provider for the local hospitals and your donation is needed for an adequate supply.

Indian Creek Baptist Church Revival
Indian Creek Baptist Church will be in Revival, Oct. 3-6 2021. Bro. Glenn Denton will be the evangelist on Oct. 3rd at 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM and Oct. 4th at 7:00 PM. Bro. Terry Wilkerson will be the evangelist on Oct. 5th at 7:00 PM and on the 6th at 7:00 PM. Special music each service and outside broadcasting will be available. Volunteers needed for working at Whorton Springs Cemetery
Volunteers needed for working at Whorton Springs Cemetery. This is not mowing or weed eating. It will be to fill graves that have sunken and reset monuments that are leaning or that have already fallen. Shovels and rakes are the only tools needed. The dirt will be moved with the assistance already volunteered by individual with a skid-steer. October 23, 2021 8:00 a.m. In case of rain, working will be postponed to following Saturday October 30, 2021 8:00 a.m.

UCHRA Commodities Distribution
The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) will hold a commodities distribution for DeKalb County on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the DeKalb County UCHRA office. Sign-up will be available at the distribution site. This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee

City to Host Open House for New Smithville Police Department Building
The public will get to take a tour of the new Smithville Police Department building soon. The City of Smithville has scheduled an open house for Sunday, October 17 from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. “We would like to invite the community out for snacks and a time to look through the new police department. This will also give the community a time to meet our city officers. We are very excited that our officers will have a new spacious building to work in,” said Mayor Josh Miller. “We are grateful to the mayor and aldermen and the citizens of Smithville for this facility. Our entire police department staff and I are looking forward to moving into the new building once its furnished and some finishing touches are made. This is something we are all proud of and believe the community can take pride in it as well. We invite everyone to come out and see us during the open house,” said Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins.

DeKalb County Regional Planning Commission Public Hearing
The DeKalb County Regional Planning Commission will have a public hearing scheduled on Monday, October 11, 2021 at the DeKalb County Courthouse for the purpose of receiving public comment regarding the following: Removing portions of Parkway Drive, Shady Drive, 2nd Street and Allen Street from the county road list and transferring ownership of those sections to the City of Smithville. The public hearing will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the downstairs courtroom. All citizens are invited to attend. DCHS Choir Concert
The DCHS choir is going to perform a concert on Thursday, October 7 at 6:30 pm in the auditorium at DCHS. Attendance is free of charge, though donations will be highly appreciated.

DEA National Drug Take Back Day October 23
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is set for Saturday, October 23. As part of this major health and safety initiative, the DeKalb Prevention Coalition will host this take-back event at Smithville City Hall and the Alexandria City Hall from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The public will be provided the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. (Sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharp instruments, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Homecoming and Revival at Covenant Baptist Church
A Homecoming and Revival will be held at the Covenant Baptist Church at the corner of Miller Road and Short Mountain Street in October. The Homecoming will be Sunday, October 10 beginning at 11 a.m. followed by lunch. The Revival will begin Sunday night, October 10 at 5 p.m. Thurman Seber will be bringing the message. Monday through Friday services will be at 7 p.m. with special singing nightly. Everyone is invited!

Puckett’s Point Boat Ramp Still Closed
The Pucketts Point Boat Ramp will remain closed until the lake levels recede and repairs can be completed. You will be notified when repairs are complete and boat ramp reopens.

Smithville Boo Bash Set for October 29
As Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, the 10th annual “Smithville Boo Bash” event is scheduled for Friday, October 29th, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The City plans to block off streets around the public square starting at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning.

“We will be conducting this event as safely as we possibly can again this year. We encourage businesses to set up outside if possible and parents to incorporate masks into your child’s costume,” said spokesperson Beth Adcock.

During the Smithville Halloween Boo Bash, the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber will be sponsoring the Best Costume Contest and Best Decorations for participating Smithville businesses and offices. Winners will be presented a “Boo Bash” Best Costume or Best Decoration award, local media and social media recognition, winner announcements on the November WJLE Chamber Chat Radio and DTC TV program, and most important – “bragging rights!”

Are you a veteran in need of assistance? DeKalb County has a Veteran’s Service Officer ready to help you, not only with filing claims, but for conversations about your service.

Retired military service officer Bill Rutherford is located on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse and is ready to offer assistance. He is available for in-office visits each Tuesday and Thursday or can be reached by telephone at any time at 615-560-3610.

Second Annual Pumpkin Festival Coming to Smithville
The second annual Pumpkin Festival will be coming to downtown Smithville on the public square October 23 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. featuring over 100 arts and crafts vendors along with food vendors, a fun zone for kids, helicopter rides, and a pumpkin patch.
