Mayor Josh Miller Proclaims May 2-8 Small Business Week in Smithville

Smithville Mayor Josh Miller urges you to join him and the City of Smithville in celebrating small businesses May 2-8 during the 58th Annual National Small Business Week in the U.S.

Mayor Miller Friday issued a City of Smithville Proclamation to commemorate Small Business Week.

“Small businesses are critically important to the overall economic health of our city, county, state and country because they create jobs, boost our local economy and contribute to the growth of our neighborhoods. Small businesses deserve all the support they can get from us as citizens and consumers in order for them to thrive and grow, especially after the hardships many have endured due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Miller.

The City of Smithville Proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS, The City of Smithville celebrates our local small businesses in the contributions they make to our local economy and community; and

WHEREAS, Small businesses employs over 48% of the working population in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Small businesses contribute positively to the local economy by supplying jobs and generating tax revenue; and

WHEREAS, Small businesses are crucial to the overall economic health of the United States; and

WHEREAS, The City of Smithville supports our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy, and preserve our neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, Advocacy groups as well as public and private organizations across the country have endorsed Small Business Week the first week in May.

NOW, THEREFORE I, JOSH MILLER, MAYOR OF SMITHVILLE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM MAY 2-8, 2021 TO BE IN OUR CITY SMALL BUSINESS WEEK

The Smithville First Baptist Church is hosting its 3rd annual Spring Community Day on Saturday, May 1 from 10 am until 12 noon at the church’s Life Enrichment Center (gym).

The community is invited to turn out for great fellowship and a lot of freebies.

“We have 100 boxed fans to help keep you cool this summer and we will give one away to each family who attends until we have no more fans,” said FBC Pastor Chad Ramsey.

“ We also have some summer shoes including Crocs and sandals for kids”.

“If you are a senior adult or a single mom we want to give you a free oil change. We have partnered with Napa Auto Parts so if you want a free oil change call us at 615-597-4275 and leave a message because those will have to be scheduled,” said Ramsey.

Unlike previous years no yard sale will be held this year but there will still be plenty to do.

“Its going to be a great day as we serve the community and show our care and love for everyone so come be part of this exciting event Saturday,” said Pastor Ramsey.

DeKalb County’s share of local option sales tax collections for March 2021 outperformed the same month in 2020 by more than $13,000 according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue. For the county and the four cities therein combined collections were up by more than $33,000.

Still the increase shown in March was not as large as the previous eight months of the fiscal year (July, 2020 to March, 2021). (VIEW CHARTS)

In his monthly report on local option sales tax collections, County Mayor Tim Stribling informed the county commission Monday night that DeKalb County brought in $99,223 in March, 2021 compared to $85,621 for March, 2020.

Three of the four cities within DeKalb County also hauled in more local option sales tax revenue.

The comparisons between the two months for each municipality are as follows:

Smithville: $264,486 ( March, 2021), $251,032 (March 2020)

Alexandria: $26,214 (March, 2021), $21,140 (March 2020)

Dowelltown: $2,473 (March, 2021), $4,375 (March (2020)

Liberty: $7,385 (March, 2021), $3,958 (March 2020)

NET COLLECTIONS (LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX): $399,784 (March 2021), $366, 127 (March 2020)
