DeKalb Unemployment Rate Dropped to 5.8% in November

Each of Tennessee’s 95 counties experienced decreased unemployment in November 2020, according to new data released Thursday by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD).

Unemployment rates in 41 counties are now less than 5%. Fifty-four counties recorded rates of 5% or higher during the month.

DeKalb County’s unemployment rate for November was 5.8%, down from 8.3% in October. The rate for November 2019 was 4%.

The local labor force was 7,908 in November. A total of 7,452 were employed and 456 were without work.

Williamson County had the lowest unemployment rate. At 3.3%, its November rate dropped by 1.3 percentage points when compared to October. The new rate is just 1 percentage point higher than it was in November 2019.

At 3.6%, Moore County had the state’s second-lowest rate for the month. The new figure is 1 percentage point lower than its October rate of 4.6%.

Lake County recorded the highest jobless rate in November, but it still experienced a significant drop in unemployment. The county’s new rate is 8.1%, down 2 percentage points when compared to October.

Shelby County’s unemployment rate dropped more than any other county in the state. At 7.3%, it has the second-highest rate for the month, but it decreased by 3.7 percentage points when compared to its October rate of 11%.

Statewide, Tennessee experienced significantly lower unemployment during the month. The preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November is 5.3%, a 2 percentage point drop from October’s revised rate of 7.3%. The new statistic is just 2 percentage points higher than the state’s unemployment rate one year ago in November.

The state offers online options for Tennesseans searching for employment. Currently, on the state’s workforce development website, Jobs4TN.gov, job seekers can find more than 230,000 open positions in a wide range of occupations and skill levels.

TDLWD recently launched the Tennessee Virtual American Job Center (VAJC). The new website located at www.TNVirtualAJC.com allows Tennesseans to research different programs, from different state agencies, that can help them remove barriers to employment so they can more easily reenter Tennessee’s workforce. The VAJC allows job seekers to do this on their schedule, anytime, anywhere.

County Clerk Office Closed Due to Covid-19
Due to Covid-19, the DeKalb County Clerk’s Office is closed to the public until at least Monday, January 4. Poss said he and his staff are now in quarantine and will be unable to keep the County Clerk’s Office open for the next few days. Plans are to reopen the office on Monday, January 4

Court House and County Offices to be closed for the holidays
The DeKalb County Courthouse, County Complex County Offices, and Senior Center will be closed Thursday Christmas Eve December 24, 2020 and Friday Christmas Day December 25, 2020.

Mike Foster Multipurpose Center to be closed for the holidays
The Mike Foster Multipurpose Center in the county complex will be closed Thursday Christmas Eve December 24, Friday Christmas Day December 25 and Saturday December 26, 2020.

DeKalb County Transfer Station and all trash collection sites to be closed Christmas Day
The DeKalb County Transfer Station and all trash collection sites will be closed Friday Christmas day December 25, 2020.

No Garbage Pickup in Smithville on Christmas Day
The City of Smithville has announced that there will be no garbage pickup on Christmas Day. All Friday garbage routes will be run Monday, December 28 along with the regular Monday routes. All Thursday garbage pickup routes will be run as scheduled Christmas eve, December 24.

DeKalb County Libraries Holiday Schedule
Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries will be closed December 23rd through December 26th for the Christmas holiday and New Year’s Day on January 1st.

LBJ Head Start to be Closed for Holidays
The L.B.J.& C. Development Corporation Head Start Centers will be closed December 21, 2020 through January 3, 2021. Children and staff will return to the Head Start Centers on January 4, 2021. The L.B.J.& C. Development Corporation Head Start Central Office will be closed December 23, 24, 25, 2020 and January 1, 2021.

DeKalb County has a new Attorney.

Matthew W. Boss took the oath Friday, December 18th administered by Judge Bratten Cook, II. The brief ceremony was held in the General Sessions Courtroom.

Boss a lifelong resident of Alexandria, is the son of Joey and Kimberly Boss of Alexandria. He graduated from DeKalb County High School in 2013. In May, 2016, Boss graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. Boss graduated from Thomas Goode Jones Law School in Montgomery, Alabama in May, 2019.

Matthew’s office will be in the Hendrix Law Building in Smithville, at 301 N Public Square.

“Becoming an Attorney is an exciting time in my life, I am looking forward to advocating for people and their rights” said Boss.
