Caregiver and her Husband Charged with Stealing from Dementia Patient

A caregiver has been charged with stealing a debit card from a dementia patient she had been caring for. She and her husband then used the card to make purchases for themselves at Walmart.

According to the Smithville Police Department, 47 year old Natasha Gail Judkins and 51 year old Shayne Allen Judkins of 645 Keltonburg Road are each charged with theft of property over $1,000. Bond for each is $7,500 and they will make a court appearance on December 19.

According to the warrants: Natasha and Shayne Judkins used the stolen debit card from June 29 to November 4 at Wal-Mart where they purchased merchandise and received cash back totaling $2,605.06.

In a separate case, Natasha was cited for theft of property on December 10 after being spotted on Walmart surveillance video failing to scan or pay for items totaling $323.29 while using the self checkout on eight separate occasions. Her court date for that offense is also December 19.




Alexandria Christmas Parade Sunday

Santa will make another appearance in DeKalb County on Sunday for the Alexandria Christmas Parade.

The Parade will be Sunday, December 15 at 2 p.m. with the line-up at 1 p.m. on West Main Street. To enter contact the Alexandria City Hall to fill out an entry form. Call 615-529-2171 for more information.

Board of Education Meets Briefly

In a brief monthly meeting Thursday night, Director of Schools Patrick Cripps updated the Board of Education on personnel moves since last month.

He said Christina Merriman has been granted a leave of absence.

Jerry Strait has been transferred from a substitute to an educational assistant position at DCHS replacing Toby Nokes who has resigned. Samantha Leiser has also resigned as a teacher at DeKalb Middle School.

Smithville Elementary School Principal Summer Cantrell gave a brief school report.

“We have had several community outreach programs including our canned food drive in which we had 977 items donated. We also partnered with Cash Express and they collected a lot of coats for children in our community. We want to thank them for that. We are excited to wrap up this semester. We want to wish everyone happy holidays and to thank everyone for a successful first semester at Smithville Elementary,” said Cantrell.

In other business, the board voted to change the date for the May, 2020 regular monthly board meeting from May 14 to May 7, adopted a set of updated board policies on 2nd reading, and named a new textbook selection committee

The board also approved an overnight trip request for three DCHS students to attend the TN Junior Chef Competition, Nashville Farmer’s Market January 9-11 and the Board authorized its members to attend the Tennessee School Boards Association Day on the Hill in Nashville, February 17-18.
