McCurry Found with Stolen Motorcycle and Drugs

A man on a stolen motorcycle pulled over by Smithville Police for suspicion of DUI will be in court next month for these and other offenses.

41 year old Charles Nathan McCurry is charged with evading arrest, tampering with evidence, a 2^nd offense of driving under the influence, theft of property, and possession of schedule II and V drugs with intent to manufacture or sell. His bond totals $47,000 and he will be in court on September 5.

According to Smithville Police, an officer spotted McCurry operating a motorcycle on Friday, August 16 and tried to pull him over on Cooper Avenue for suspicion of DUI. McCurry failed to stop and continued north on Cooper Avenue before turning south on Luttrell Avenue and stopping at a residence. After getting off the motorcycle, McCurry was met by a woman standing in the driveway and he handed her something which she stuffed into her pants. When confronted by police, the woman, 39 year old Abigail Vogel, pulled from inside her pants a black bag and dropped it on the ground. Inside the bag was about 7.5 grams of a white crystal like substance believed to be meth, 7 green half pills identified as Alprazolam, drug paraphernalia, and a clear plastic baggie containing 130 Gabapentin capsules. Vogel was later charged with evidence tampering .

During the investigation police observed that McCurry’s speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. McCurry admitted to having used meth within the previous three days. He also had an odor of alcohol on his person. Due to his condition and circumstances of the traffic stop, field sobriety tasks were not conducted but a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample from McCurry.

Police also learned while conducting a license check that the motorcycle, a 2016 Honda CBR 300, was reported stolen from White County on July 9. The bike is valued at $2,600.

Vogel appeared in General Sessions Court on Thursday, August 22 where she entered a plea to simple possession of methamphetamine. Vogel received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days to serve 30 days and she was fined $750.

Meanwhile, 38 year old Kenneth Lee (Kenny) Bain was charged with theft of property or shoplifting for an offense which occurred almost a year ago on September 4, 2018. According to police, Bain took several items from Walmart in Smithville without paying for them. He was observed lifting 4 items from the make-up aisle and taking some BC powder. After putting those items in his pants pocket, Bain paid for a separate pair of pants and left the store. After Bain was escorted back in the store he admitted to the theft. Bain then gave back the stolen items valued at $42.70

24 year old Kayla Lynn Hogue is charged with domestic assault. According to Alexandria Police, an officer was dispatched to 219 Academy Avenue on August 18 due to a possible domestic assault. Upon arrival he spoke with the complainants who reported that an argument had occurred between them and Hogue, their daughter which resulted in Hogue hitting her mother in the face. After a further investigation Hogue was determined to have been the primary aggressor and she was placed under arrest.  Her bond is $2,500 and she will make a court appearance on September 5.

Two people were charged in separate offenses of falsifying a drug test.

Police said that 28 year old Jacob R. Lawrence tried to falsify his drug screen at CPS probation on July 10 by concealing a bottle of someone else’s urine. But his crime was exposed when the bottle fell out of Lawrence’s pants leg onto the floor. His bond for this offense is $1,500.

Meanwhile, 48 year old Shauna Taylor of Hurricane Ridge Road was charged after she falsified a drug test for CPS probation by using someone else’s urine. Taylor had hidden the bottle of urine in her body cavity but she was caught when it fell out into the toilet. Her bond is $1,500.

Brandon Lee Starnes is charged with domestic assault. His bond is $3,500 and he will make a court appearance on September 5.

According to Smithville Police, an officer was called to 413 East Broad Street on August 16 due to a domestic assault.  Upon arrival he spoke with Starnes who stated that he and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument inside the bar. Witnesses there said Starnes forcefully put his girlfriend in his truck, struck her in the chest, and slammed the truck door on her legs. Police said Starnes  admitted to forcefully putting the woman in the truck. Due to his actions, the woman suffered a large laceration to her right eye.

A motorcycle operator suffered only minor injuries after a crash Saturday morning on the Old Bildad Road.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 35 year old Daniel Anderson, II of Smithville was traveling east on a 2003 Honda V 13 motorcycle when he went off the right side of the road and crashed. Anderson, who was wearing his helmet, complained mainly of shoulder pain but refused EMS transport to the hospital.

The accident was investigated by THP Trooper Bobby Johnson.

Newly released data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) shows July 2019 county unemployment increased in counties across the state.

DeKalb County’s Jobless rate for July was 5.2%, up from the rate of 4.8% for June and an increase from the 2018 July jobless rate of 4.9%.

The local labor force for July was 7,988. A total of 7,569 were employed and 419 were without work.

Rates inched upward in 93 of Tennessee’s 95 counties and remained the same in two counties last month. 44 counties have an unemployment rate of less than five percent, while 51 counties have a rate of five percent or higher.

“Due to a variety of factors, it’s not unusual to see unemployment increase on the county level during the summer months,” said TDLWD Commissioner Jeff McCord. “We’ll continue to monitor these rates as we finish the summer and move into fall.”

Williamson and Davidson counties had Tennessee’s lowest jobless rate during July. At 3.2 percent, both counties experienced a jump of 0.2 of a percentage point in unemployment when compared to June’s numbers.

Sevier, Cheatham, Rutherford, Sumner, Wilson, Maury, Robertson, and Dickson round out the list of counties with the ten lowest unemployment rates in the state.

Hancock County had the state’s highest unemployment rate at 8.2 percent. That is 0.5 of a percentage point higher than it was in June. At 8.1 percent, Clay County had the second-highest jobless rate in July. That represents a jump of 0.8 percentage point when compared to the previous month.

Lake, Rhea, Weakley, Bledsoe, Lauderdale, Carroll, McNairy, and Dyer counties had the next highest unemployment rates in July.

Statewide, unemployment slightly increased last month to 3.5 percent, an uptick of 0.1 of a percentage point when compared to June’s statistic.

The July unemployment rate for the United States remained unchanged in July at 3.7 percent.

County unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted, while both the state and national rates use the seasonal adjustment to eliminate outside influencers on the statistics.
