Deadline Approaching for Returning FSA Ballots

Donny Green, County Executive Director of the DeKalb/Cannon County Farm Service Agency, reminds DeKalb and Cannon County eligible voters in Local Administrative Areas (LAA) # 1 (DeKalb County) and # 5 (Cannon County) that Monday, December 3 is the deadline to return election ballots. If ballots are returned by mail, they must be postmarked by December 3, 2018. If they are delivered to the office in person, they must be delivered by 4:30 p.m. December 3, 2018.

Randall West and Jimmy Womack are candidates nominated for LAA # 1 (DeKalb Co.). Both candidates have been certified as eligible candidates. Randall West is currently completing his first 3-year term on the DeKalb FSA County Committee. Both Mr. West and Mr. Womack operate beef cattle farms in the Jacobs Pillar community.

Robert “Bob” Melton is the only candidate nominated for LAA # 5 (Cannon Co.). Bob has been certified as an eligible candidate. Mr. Melton is a retired Cannon County vocational agriculture teacher and operates a livestock farm in the Hollis Creek area of Cannon County. Bob is completing his first 3-year term on the DeKalb/Cannon FSA County Committee.

Write-in nominations can be accepted on ballots. However, the write-in nominee must meet eligibility criteria and attest to his or her willingness to serve, if elected, by signing a nominating petition. Agricultural producers were encouraged to submit candidate names during the nomination period that ended August 1, 2018.

To be an eligible voter, farmers and ranchers must participate or cooperate in FSA programs.  A person who is not of legal voting age but supervises and conducts the farming operations of an entire farm can also vote.

Eligible voters in DeKalb County LAA # 1 or Cannon County LAA # 5 who did not receive a ballot can obtain a ballot at their local USDA Service Center. The DeKalb/Cannon FSA County Committee will meet on December 4, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. to canvass and tabulate the ballots. This meeting is open to the public. The newly elected committee member and alternates take office January 1st, 2019.

A man originally charged with eight counts of forgery entered a plea to one count Monday in DeKalb County Criminal Court.

28 year old Christopher Medlin also entered a plea to violation of probation in a previous case.

Medlin will be on four years probation for the forgery after he serves the balance of a six year sentence in the previous case for violating his probation. He must also make restitution of $2,184 to one victim and $1,200 to another for the forgeries.

In other cases 37 year old Terry Wayne Knowles entered a plea to a second offense of driving on a revoked license and received a sentence of six months on supervised probation by CPS and six months of unsupervised probation if all court costs are paid.

48 year old Richard Allen Tilley entered a plea by criminal information to reckless endangerment and received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days on supervised probation.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Friday, April 7, 2017 deputies were dispatched to a residence on Short Mountain Highway due to a possible domestic violence incident. While enroute, Central dispatch notified the officers that the man involved had left the residence in a white Nissan Titan. A deputy spotted the vehicle and stopped it on Short Mountain Highway. The driver, Tilley submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. He was unsteady on his feet and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person.

Quick action by the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department Thursday night prevented a chimney fire from spreading.

Firefighters were called to the home of Jeff Poteete at 701 Henley Hollow Road.

According to Fire Chief Donny Green, Poteete heard a popping sound from behind the fireplace and saw flames coming out of the chimney. He then called 911.

Upon arrival firefighters used a chemical fire suppressant called Chimnex to put out the blaze which apparently began from creosote build up in the chimney. There was no damage to the home and no one was injured.

Members of the Liberty and Main Stations responded along with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.

“If you heat with wood, it’s important to have your chimney inspected and your flue cleaned at the start of the heating season,” said Chief Donny Green. “Professional chimney sweeps can check for cracked or broken mortar that can let the heat escape the chimney and start a fire, as well as remove accumulated creosote which is the cause of most chimney fires.”
