D.W.S. Announces January Students, Teacher, Employee of the Month

DeKalb West School has announced the January Students, Teacher, and Employee of the Month. Congratulations are in order for the following students: Eloise Hendrix, PreK, Lincoln Simon, Kindergarten, Ashton Wright, 1st grade, Alexandria McDaniel, 2nd grade, Mason Checchi, 3rd grade, Leo Dotts, 4th grade, Leah Chittwood, 5th grade, Billy Clark, 6th grade, Savana Muncey, 7th grade, and Autumn Crook, 8th grade.
Third grade educator Jessica Antoniak was named the Teacher of the Month, and McKenzie Dunaway was selected as the Employee of the Month.

Monday, February 5 is Voter Registration Deadline for March 5 Primaries

DeKalb County residents must register to vote by Monday, February 5, 2024 to be able to cast a ballot in the DeKalb County Republican or Democratic primary elections or Presidential Preference Primary on March 5, 2024.
Registering to vote, updating your address or checking your registration status is fast, easy and secure with the Secretary of State’s online voter registration system. Any U.S. citizen with a driver’s license or photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security can register online from any computer or mobile device at GoVoteTN.gov.
“I encourage all Tennesseans to register to vote or make sure their registration is up-to-date before the deadline,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett. “It is important for all of us to make our voice heard at the polls and with our convenient online voter registration system you can safely register in minutes.”
Paper voter registration applications are available to download on GoVoteTN.gov or at the DeKalb County Election Commission Office or at www.dekalbelections.com. Completed paper voter registration applications can be submitted in person by close of business at 4 p.m. Monday, February 5 or if mailed it must be postmarked by February 5, 2024.
The DeKalb County Election Commission is located on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse in Smithville. Voters can drop off completed registration forms or register in person Monday, February 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in time for the March 5 Primaries.

Upperman’s Game Winning Free Throw Shot Sinks Lady Tigers Upset Hopes

The DCHS Lady Tigers came close to pulling off an upset Friday night at home but Upperman sank a free throw with less than a second left in the game to propel the Lady Bees to a low scoring 29 to 28 victory over the DeKalb County girls. The Tigers were beaten by the Bees 75 to 41.
The Tigers are now 10-15 on the season and 1-7 in the district. The Lady Tigers own a record of 9-16 overall and 0-8 in district play. The Lady Bees improve to 22-3 and 6-1 in the district while the Bees are 20-4 on the season and 6-1 in district action.
In the last meeting on January 12 at Baxter, the Lady Tigers lost 41 to 28 while the Tigers were dealt a 58 to 46 defeat.
In the girls game Friday night, the Lady Tigers led 10 to 6 after the 1st period but trailed 15 to 14 by halftime. DeKalb County went back out front 22 to 17 at the end of the 3rd period but were outscored in the 4th period and lost 29 to 28.
Ella VanVranken scored 10, Cam Branin 6, Avery Agee 5, Allie Melton 3, and Chloe VanVranken and Tess Barton each with 2.
The Tigers were down 25 to 8 after the 1st period and trailed 41 to 17 at halftime. The Bees led 67 to 30 after the 3rd period and went on to claim a 75 to 41 victory.
For the Tigers, Jon Hendrix scored 9, Alex Antoniak and Jordan Parker each with 6, Conner Close and Ian Colwell each with 5, Chase Young 3, Owen Snipes, Logan Duke, and Seth Fuson each with 2 and Kaleb Spears with 1.
The remaining schedule of the DCHS Tigers and Lady Tigers is as follows:
Monday, February 5 vs. Livingston Academy in Smithville (Senior Night)
Thursday, February 8 at Stone Memorial in Crossville
Saturday, February 10 at Warren County in McMinnville (starting at 3 p.m. with the girls game and the boys game to follow)
All other games will start at 6 p.m. with the girls and the boys to follow.
