Election Commission Sets Early Voting Hours for March 5 Primaries

Voters will again find it convenient to vote early for the upcoming March 5 DeKalb County Republican and Democratic Primaries and the Tennessee Presidential Preference Primary. The early voting period will be Wednesday, February 14 through Tuesday, February 27. The Absentee ballot request deadline is Tuesday, February 27.

The DeKalb County Election Commission voted Monday night to set the early voting hours in Smithville and Alexandria. The two days set for early voting in Alexandria at the Fairgrounds Kenneth Sandlin Center building are Thursday, February 15 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon and Tuesday, February 20 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The early voting hours for the March 5 primaries will be as follows at the courthouse in Smithville:

Wednesday February 14: (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.)

Thursday, February 15: (2 p.m. until 6 p.m.)

Friday, February 16: (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.)

Saturday, February 17: (9 a.m. until 12 noon)

Monday, February 19 (CLOSED) PRESIDENTS DAY

Tuesday, February 20: (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.)

Wednesday, February 21: (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.)

Thursday, February 22: (2 p.m. until 6 p.m.)

Friday, February 23: (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.)

Saturday, February 24: (9 a.m. until 12 noon)

Monday, February 26: (1 p.m. until 5 p.m.)

Tuesday, February 27: (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.)

If you plan to vote in the March 5 DeKalb County Republican and Democratic Primaries and the Tennessee Presidential Preference Primary you have less than a month to make sure you are properly registered.

The voter registration deadline for the March 5th primaries is February 5.

Local party nominees will be chosen by the voters on March 5 for the offices of Property Assessor, Constable (districts 1-7) Board of Education (5th & 6th) districts along with the newly created position of criminal court judge-Part III in the 13th judicial district.

There are only two contested races including Property Assessor and 5th district school board in the DeKalb County Republican Primary. There are no Democratic candidates on the ballot in any race. Winners will be unopposed in the August , 1, 2024 General Election.

In the Tennessee Presidential Preference Primary there are nine GOP candidates and one Democrat.




Cumberland County Jets Descend on DCHS Tonight (Tuesday)

The Cumberland County Jets will descend on DeKalb County tonight (Tuesday) to take on the DCHS Tigers and Lady Tigers.

Action begins at 6 p.m. with the girls contest followed by the boys game. WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers sport records of 9-9 each and 0-1 in the district. The Cumberland County boys are 2-10 (0-1) while the Lady Jets are 12-4 (0-1).

Coverage tonight on WJLE begins with Tiger Talk at 5:40 p.m. featuring comments from Coaches Joey Agee and Brandy Alley along with players Tess Barton, Brooklyn Fuson, Ian Colwell, and Dallas Kirby.




City Gives Final Approval to Funding for Pool Repairs and Purchase of New Portable Radios (View Video Here)

The City of Smithville can now proceed with major repairs to the municipal swimming pool and purchase new portable radios for the fire department thanks to action taken by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday night.

During the regular monthly meeting, the aldermen voted to adopt on second and final reading an ordinance amending the 2023-24 budget by a total of $215,000 to fund the projects.

A total of $115,000 will be spent to purchase a total of 25 Harris XL 400 Extreme fire rated portable radios for the Smithville Fire Department. The new digital radios are meant to keep firefighters safer with reliable communication while inside a burning building battling a fire.

Meanwhile, $100,000 is being allocated for repairs and rehabilitation of the city swimming pool.

A Cut Above Outdoors, LLC in Cookeville has been contracted by the city to do the repairs for $95,700.
