Love Lights A Tree Remembers Those Lost to Cancer

December 3, 2019
By: Dwayne Page

The American Cancer Society invites you to make a special donation in honor or in memory of a loved one during the holiday season through “Love Lights a Tree”. A special memory board is being erected on the south side of the courthouse that lists the names of loved ones.

The DeKalb County Unit of the American Cancer Society seeks your support in the “Love Lights a Tree” fundraising campaign to raise money for research to find a cure as well as cancer education and patient services. Donations may be made throughout the holiday season. The persons you honor or remember do not necessarily have to have suffered from cancer.

The names are in “honor of” and in “memory of” for a donation of five-dollars per name. Forms may be obtained at the local banks. For more information, contact Ivadell Randolph at 615- 597-5296, Lynda Luna at 615- 597-5837, Renee Cantrell at 615-684-2688, or Gail Taylor 615-597-5936.

DeKalb County Man Nabbed in Multi-State Farm Equipment Theft Investigation

December 3, 2019

A DeKalb County man, the focus of a multi-state investigation into the theft of farm equipment, has returned to face several local charges

33 year old Orry Joseph Savage of Jefferson Road, Smithville is charged locally with burglary and four counts of theft. His bond totals $115,000 and he will be in court December 19.

Savage was initially identified as a suspect in the theft of a John Deere Tractor on May 21 but detectives expanded the investigation after learning that Savage was involved in other thefts.

“After he had broken into and stolen a 2012 enclosed cab John Deere tractor on Jefferson Road worth $75,000 on May 21 my detectives and chief deputy started working on this case which soon developed into a multi-state investigation. Other states began contacting us about Savage being a suspect in farm equipment thefts there. After the thefts Savage would take the stolen  farm equipment including tractors and trailers across state lines to sell and trade.  We got Savage back last week from another state where he had been detained for several months on theft charges,” said Sheriff  Patrick Ray.

In other cases locally Savage allegedly stole a car hauler and New Holland tractor valued at $13,500 on January 1, 2019.

On February 7, 2019 Savage traded a John Deere 6410 tractor which had been stolen in Warren County to someone in DeKalb County for a Polaris Razor and $10,500 cash.

On June 25, 2019 Savage was found to be in possession of a featherlite gooseneck trailer valued at $12,000 stolen in Tazwell, West Virginia.

Sheriff Ray said some of the stolen equipment has been recovered.

Second Annual Festival of Trees Opens to a Packed House

December 2, 2019
By: Dwayne Page

The 2nd Annual Festival of Trees opened to a packed house Monday night at the county complex for the unveiling of an impressive collection of uniquely decorated Christmas trees.

The festival has quickly become a local holiday favorite and serves as a charity venue for a non-profit group. This year the Lighthouse Christian Camp’s Outreach Christmas Program which serves more than 500 children will benefit from the festival.

The trees will remain on display throughout the week and visitors to the complex are urged to vote for their favorites in several categories and place gifts under the tree they like the best. The one with the most gifts under it by the end of the week will be designated “Tree of the Year”.

Other categories are “Best Christmas Spirit”, “Most Unique”, “Best Overall Theme”, “Prettiest Tree”, “Most Touching Theme”, and “the tree I want in my living room”.

All gifts collected will be donated to the Lighthouse Christian Camp Outreach Christmas Program.

Monday night’s event also featured FREE pictures with Santa on the North Pole Stage, refreshments, and the Christmas Shopping Court where vendor booths displayed delightful Christmas gift ideas for sale.
