Three Candidates Pick Up Qualifying Petitions to run for Constable in March Democratic Primary

The Election Commission has already issued three qualifying petitions for the March 3 DeKalb County Democratic Primary.
Administrator Dennis Stanley confirms that Waylon Kyle in the 1st district, Mark Milam in the 5th district, and Johnny King in the 7th district picked up petitions Monday for the office of Constable. Milam and King are incumbent constables planning to seek re-election.
Today (Monday) is the first day potential candidates running for Constable and Assessor of Property next March may obtain a petition.
Local primaries will be held in conjunction with the Presidential Preference Primary on March 3.
“The DeKalb County Democratic Party will hold a primary for the office of Assessor of Property and Constable in all seven districts,” said Stanley. “The Republican Party will select their nominees for those offices by caucus.” In addition, both local parties will hold a primary for the office of Criminal Court Judge Part II in the 13th Judicial District.
“I understand it can be a little confusing to the voters and candidates,” Stanley said, “but in simple terms Democratic candidates for Assessor of Property, Constable and Circuit Court Judge must qualify by petition and they are now available. Republican candidates for Circuit Court Judge only must qualify by petition. The other offices are chosen by another party method.”
He also reminded potential Independent candidates that they must qualify by the petition process and can obtain a petition beginning at the same time, even though they would not appear on the ballot until August.
Here are the key dates for the March 3, 2020 election:
First day to pick up petitions—October 14
Qualifying deadline—Noon December 12
Voter registration deadline—February 3, 2020
Early Voting period—Feb. 12 through February 25, 2020
Circuit Court Clerk’s Office to be Closed for Relocation to the Second Floor of Courthouse

The DeKalb County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office will begin the move from the third floor to the second floor of the courthouse Friday, October 18.
During the transition, the office will be closed for at least three days.
Circuit Court Clerk Susan Martin and her staff are relocating to the former location of the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce Office at room 201 in the courthouse. Chamber Director Suzanne Williams and the Chamber operations have moved to the county complex.
“My office will be closed October 18, 21, and 22 to move to the new office. The State has to rewire my network and computers, et cetera and we can’t operate during that time,” said Martin.
Offenders may pay fines, court costs, and traffic tickets online. This applies to fines and costs owed through the General Sessions, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts. Those who wish to make use of the service may go to www.courtfeepay.com and click the “Make a Payment” link.
After the move of the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is completed, the Recovery Court Office, currently on the second floor, will relocate to the third floor.
The Clerk and Master’s Office on the third floor will remain where it is but more storage space will be made available. The plan calls for all of the Circuit Court Clerk archives and documents in the courthouse to be moved to a room in the middle portion of the second floor while most of the storage space now used by the Circuit Court Clerk on the third floor will be turned over to the Clerk and Master for the same purpose.
The Circuit Court Clerk’s personal office across the hall from the main office where her deputy clerks work will remain under Martin’s control but will be mainly for public use related to court activities.
The County Mayor’s Office will remain where it is located on the second floor of the courthouse. The Tennessee Highway Patrol also has an office there.
The offices of the DeKalb County Election Commission, the Veterans service officer, and the judicial commissioners will remain in their present locations on the first floor.
Habitat For Humanity Dedicates New DeKalb County Home for Partner Family

DeKalb County has another homeowner!
Jamie Nokes Greco and her family celebrated the completion of their home on Sunday afternoon, built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County. The home is located at 202 Hayes Street in Smithville.
Iain Swisher, Pastor from First Assembly of God, led a prayer during the dedication ceremony and Gary Johnson, Construction Coordinator, led a responsive reading. Jamie expressed her deep appreciation for all the individuals, churches, businesses and organizations who worked on the house.
“All Glory to God. I am just thankful for the Blessing. I know its something He has bestowed upon me. I am thankful for all the volunteers and for the Habitat organization. They are changing people’s lives and I am thankful I get to be one of those people. I am extremely blessed,” Jamie told WJLE during the ground breaking ceremony in February, 2018.
This home is the sixth for a Habitat partner family in DeKalb County
Habitat’s work in DeKalb continues! This Friday, Oct. 18, the 16th Annual Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-off will be held from 10:30a.m.-1 p.m. on the Courthouse Lawn. Funds raised will help to continue building in DeKalb County.
