14th Annual Edgar Evins State Park History Hayride Offers Storytelling and Fun (VIEW VIDEO HERE)

What could be more fun on a fall day than a hayride coupled with a little history, mystery, and theater?
That’s what audiences were treated to Saturday during the 14th annual History Hayride at Edgar Evins State Park.
After boarding the hay wagons, riders were taken on a two and a half hour journey throughout the park where along the way stops were made for costumed characters to share a story about a person or event of historical significance to the park or the community.
(In the brief video clip below the character Elizabeth Dale, Black Widow of Hazel Green is a serial widow and daughter of Adam Dale, portrayed by Lori Christensen, retired Warren County High School Teacher. She talks about how the men she met and married all died. The story goes that she kept a hat from each husband after his death and she continues to look for husbands on the hay wagons)

Among the characters was Elizabeth Dale, Black Widow of Hazel Green. A serial widow and daughter of Adam Dale, portrayed by Lori Christensen, retired Warren County High School Teacher.
Several other characters were portrayed including James Edgar Evins, the man for whom the state park is named and Luke Denny, illegal moonshine hauler, who was never caught by law enforcement.
In addition to the hayride, refreshments were offered for sale at the park office and there was a campfire in front of the office for roasting marshmallows.
The annual Hayride serves as a major fundraiser for the Friends of Edgar Evins State Park.
The Smoky Nights to Perform Tonight (Saturday) in Smithville

The Smoky Nights, a 4-piece band out of Cookeville, will be performing tonight (Saturday) at Bert Driver Nursery’s Burlap Room on Highway 70 at Snow Hill from 6-9 p.m.
The group offers an interesting assortment of instruments including Guitar, Mandolin, Cajon, and Violin which all come together for a smooth, yet very Tennessee sound. They blend elements of pop, rock, soul, R&B, and folk music to create a unique and entertaining style at live shows. The Smoky Nights have been known to cover a wide variety of music from the ’60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and even current hits.
The leading members are Lily and Anthony Nguyen. Originally from Wisconsin, this duo has been performing music together for over 5 years.
Anthony is a multi-instrumentalist: drummer for 19 years, saxophonist for 16 years, guitarist for 11 years, and singer since childhood. Lily is a self-taught mandolinist and our dynamic female lead singer. She also created the name for the band, “The Smoky Nights!”
The Smoky Nights lineup also includes TN natives Carson Correll and Eric Cullins! Coming from Hendersonville, Carson is a very creative drummer and plays a modified LP Aspire Cajon that he designed and built. Carson is also a founding member of The Smoky Nights, and has been playing with us for just over 3 years!
Eric is a super talented violinist! Originally from Chattanooga, he’s currently a Senior at Tennessee Tech University and is double majoring in Computer Science and Violin Performance. Catch us playing on weekends to hear him play that fiddle along to The Devil Went Down to Georgia!
The lineup now includes a new twist on instrumentation – we’re bringing on board trumpet player Patrick Shipley! Patrick is from Oak Ridge, and plays trumpet for jazz ensembles at TTU. We’re excited to bring a brass sound to the music of The Smoky Nights!
Together, The Smoky Nights regularly play shows throughout Middle Tennessee – including Cookeville, Crossville, Livingston, Gordonsville, and Sparta.
As of July 2019, the band’s first original music is also available worldwide! The album is called “Burning Bridges” and it’s filled with a new shape of sound – a fresh and interesting blend of soul, pop, folk, R&B, and rock music.
Burning Bridges was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at County Q Studios in just 4 days. The all-original album is out on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Amazon Music, and many other major platforms.

Tigers Hold Off Owls for 28-24 Win

The DeKalb County Tigers held off the Smith County Owls 28-24 Friday night in a non-region showdown between these border rivals in Smithville.
With the game on the line and time winding down, the Owls tried to convert a 4th and goal at the Tiger 5 yard line but after catching a pass from Quarterback Cameron Spivey, Smith County’s John Ross Hord was stopped for no gain by DeKalb County’s Antwon McCoy preserving the Tiger’s lead and sealing the 28-24 victory.
DeKalb County improves to 4-4 on the season while Smith County slips to 4-3.
After a Tiger fumble on the DC 8 yard line early in the 1st period, the Owls cashed in on a 1 yard touchdown run by Hord with 7:04 left in the quarter. John Broyles connected on the PAT and Smith County led 7-0.
DeKalb County answered on an 18 yard touchdown run by Nathaniel Crook with 5:15 left in the 1st period capping a 70 yard drive. Alan Munoz converted the PAT and the game was tied 7-7.
The Owls reclaimed the lead with 2:23 left in the 1st period on an 8 yard touchdown run by Spivey. Broyles added the extra point for a 14-7 Smith County advantage.
Tiger quarterback Axel Aldino found Evan Jones on an 8 yard touchdown pass with 2.6 seconds left in the 1st period. Munoz tacked on the extra point and the game was tied 14-14.
After the Owls fumbled at their own 36 yard line, the Tigers made them pay on the next play to start the 3rd period as Aldino hooked up with Isaac Knowles for a 36 yard touchdown pass. Munoz split the uprights on the PAT and DeKalb County took the lead 21-14.
Smith County tied the game with 8:38 left in the 3rd period on a 1 yard touchdown run by Spivey completing an 81 yard drive. The PAT by Broyles was good and the score was 21-21.
The Owls went back out front 24-21 with 8:20 left in the 4th period on a 27 yard field goal Broyles.
The Tigers found pay dirt one last time which proved to be the game winner as Aldino scored on a 4 yard quarterback keeper with 4:09 left in the game completing a 67 yard drive. Munoz added the extra point and DeKalb County went on to claim a 28-24 victory.
DeKalb County will host region foe Macon County next Friday night, October 18. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.
