A school bus with 12 children on board was rear-ended by a motorist on Broad Street this afternoon (Tuesday) at the intersection with South Mountain Street.
According to authorities, an elderly woman driving a Ford car had just pulled out of the Dairy Queen parking lot and turned right heading east but as traffic stopped at the red light in front of her, the woman’s car accelerated and struck the rear of bus #15-43. The car then went off the highway and came to rest on the property of Advance Financial.
No one on board the bus was hurt and the driver of the car also escaped injury.
Director of Schools Patrick Cripps said parents of the students were called to pick them up at the scene. The bus, which had some minor damage to the rear bumper, was taken to the school bus garage. The car sustained considerable damage.
The accident was investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Members of the Smithville Police and Fire Departments were also on the scene.

Since its beginnings in the fall of 2013, more than 50 families coping with stillbirth and infant loss have benefitted from the love and support of Paislee’s Foundation.
Established by Tyler and Jessica Cripps of Alexandria in memory of their daughter Paislee Cheyanne Cripps, who was stillborn on May 3, 2013, the foundation’s purpose is to support those whose lives have been touched tragically within the past six months due to stillbirth, infant loss, or child loss up to three years old. Through the foundation, families can receive funds to assist them with funeral costs or other expenses.
One of the annual fundraisers is set for Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds in Alexandria. Dozens of vendors and a large crowd of shoppers are expected for the 6th annual Paislee’s Foundation Craft & Home Show in the Kenneth Sandlin Center. Admission and parking are free.
All proceeds from the craft show and other fundraisers, including an annual 5K and chili supper go directly to the foundation, a 501c 3 non-profit organization. Donations accepted.

Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital Adds High-Tech CT Scanner
October 8, 2019
By:
Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital is pleased to announce this month’s installation of a new computerized tomography (CT) scanner built to provide high-quality images quickly and to reduce the need for patient transfer from Smithville to surrounding cities.
CT scans play an important role in patient care. They are crucial to the diagnosis of many cancers, the detection of various internal injuries, the evaluation of many infections, and the pre-procedural planning for some surgeries. Replacing a scanner that is more than 15 years old, the new GE Healthcare 16 slice Gold Optima CT scanner will require less down time than its predecessor and will improve patient wait times.
DeKalb’s considerable investment in this technology is a product of its increasing commitment to providing options for stroke patients. The new model can provide early diagnosis of hemorrhagic stroke, enabling intervention methods like the administration of “clot busting” medications to patients experiencing acute stroke.
“This new scanner will allow Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital to improve service to our community by providing us with images much faster,” said Bradley Mullinax, Chief Administrative Officer, Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital. “With this new equipment, we can serve more people at a greater speed.”
Scanner maintenance and servicing will take place in-house at Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital, allowing for near-continuous use.
