Three Members of DCHS Band to take their Final Bow Tonight During Senior Night

Three seniors with the DeKalb County High School Fighting Tiger Marching Band take to the football field for the final time tonight (Oct. 26). In the first part of a three-part series, WJLE talks with Harley Sloan. The daughter of Misty Walden and Darrell Sloan, she has played alto saxophone her final two years of high school. Harley first made her way to the band room thanks to her boyfriend, drum major Axel Rico.
“I’ve always really loved music, but I never knew how to put myself out there to get into it until I met Axel,” Sloan says. “Since he’s been in band, I was around it more, and I’ve enjoyed it ever since.”
Harley was drawn to the sound of the sax.
“I’ve always liked the lower sound I guess you could say,” explains Harley. “It made me like that instrument more than any of the other ones.”
Learning the brass instrument was enjoyable but challenging.
“When I first joined, I didn’t know how to read music, and so I had to memorize everything,” she says. “What was most challenging to me was memorizing all the music and marching with it at the same time. After a few runs, you get the hang of it.”
Sloan says she’s enjoyed practicing the field show and going to the football games with her friends. Although she’ll be departing D-C-H-S next May, she hopes music will still be a part of her life.
“I’m going to college and become a nurse,” says Sloan. “Depending on the college [I attend], maybe I can be in their marching band, hopefully. I love music.”
Tomorrow we’ll feature award-winning drum major Axel Rico. The band travels to Seymour, Tennessee Saturday to play in the Foothills Classic.
15th Annual Habitat Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale TODAY at County Complex

Who makes the best chili in DeKalb County? Find out today (Friday, October 26th) when Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County hosts its 15th annual Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale.
Chili will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex. The event had been planned outside on the north side of the courthouse grounds but was relocated due to rainy weather.
For a cash donation, eat all the chili you want and vote for your favorite chili and the best decorated booth. You be the judge. A limited supply of pottery bowls will be available for $20. Delicious baked goods prepared by members of local churches will also be for sale. Take out is also available.
Awards and bragging rights will be given in the following manner: 1st and 2nd place chili, 1st and 2nd place booth decoration, and People’s Choice Chili (Golden Spoon Award).
Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

American Legion Post Plans Veterans Day Observance

The men and women who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedom will be honored in a special Veterans Day program Friday morning, November 9 at the DeKalb County Complex auditorium hosted by the American Legion Post #122. Veteran’s Day is Sunday, November 11.
The observance begins at 9:15 a.m. with patriotic music by Susan Hinton followed by a performance from the DCHS Chorus and Band at 9:30 a.m. then the presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop #347. The DCHS Chorus will sing the National Anthem and a prayer will be offered by local minister Larry Green. Commander William Edmonds will make welcoming remarks and Judy Redmon, President of the Ladies’ Auxiliary will introduce the guest speaker, Richard Buford of the American Legion Department of Tennessee Post #46. After the program, the audience will gather at the Veterans Memorial Monument at the courthouse for placement of a wreath. Josh Moon will blow taps to close the program.
Veterans who wish to will be transported by school bus from the county complex to the town square courtesy of School Transportation Supervisor Jimmy Sprague.
A lunch for veterans and their families, band, and program participants will be provided by the Senior Citizens and Director Pam Redmon and American Legion Post #122.
