Dreams of State Tournament Appearance for DCHS Tiger Soccer Players Dashed in Sectionals Showdown

The DCHS Tiger Soccer Team had its sights set on a state tournament appearance going into Sunday’s Sectionals (Sub State) showdown with visiting East Hamilton, but their dreams evaporated with a 3 to 1 loss to the Hurricanes.

Senior Miguel Mata scored the Tigers’ only goal in the 31st minute of play.

With the loss, the season for the Tigers ends at 11-7-1 but what a season it was because for the first time in program history the team claimed a region championship and hosted a Sub-State game.

East Hamilton will now advance to the state tournament this week.

Two people escaped serious injury after their single engine plane went down Sunday afternoon in an open field near Old Temperance Hall Road in DeKalb County.

According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, the pilot was 61-year-old Eric Garrison of Powell, Tennessee and 60-year-old Debbie Cook of Knoxville was the passenger. Garrison sustained a minor injury. Cook was not hurt.

“DeKalb Central Dispatch received a call from the Nashville Approach Air Traffic Control at 2:50 p.m. that stated a plane had gone down around the Old Temperance Hall Road area,” said Sheriff Ray.

“DeKalb EMS, the Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad, the DeKalb County Fire Department, and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Old Temperance Hall Road address,” he continued.

“The pilot said he was flying in a 1966 fixed wing Piper Cherokee 180 when the engine failed. A witness on the ground in the Old Temperance Hall Road area observed that the plane appeared to be in distress, and he saw it go down. The witness reached the plane on a Side-By-Side and helped get the pilot and passenger out of the plane. He also helped bring emergency personnel to the scene and then returned them all to the roadway,” said Sheriff Ray.

“According to the pilot, he filled up with fuel in Knoxville, flew to Nashville, and was on his way back to the Seymour Airport in East Tennessee when the plane went down in DeKalb County,” he said.

“I want to thank Central Dispatch and the responding agencies that came to help us,” Sheriff Ray concluded.

A week dedicated to celebrating emergency service workers is being recognized in DeKalb County.

The community relies on emergency workers to rush to the rescue, no matter what the circumstance.

County Mayor Matt Adcock has signed a proclamation designating May 21-27 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in DeKalb County. EMS Director Hoyte Hale joined County Mayor Adcock for the occasion.

“We are proud of our DeKalb County EMS employees, EMTs, Paramedics, First Responders and Dispatchers. They are on the front lines, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year Their commitment, dedication and bravery speaks to their character and willingness to serve others, not just this week, but every day of the year. We are honored to celebrate their service this week, and we are grateful to them every day,” said Adcock.

The proclamation is as follows:

“Whereas, Emergency Medical Services is a vital public service; and Whereas, the members of Emergency Medical Teams are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and

Whereas, access to quality Emergency Care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury; and

Whereas, the Emergency Medical Services system consists of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators, and others; and

Whereas, the members of Emergency Medical Services teams, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of Emergency Medical Services providers by designating Emergency Medical Services Week;

Now, Therefore, I Matt Adcock, County Mayor, DeKalb County, Tennessee, in recognition of this event do hereby proclaim the week of May 21-27 as Emergency Medical Services Week.

With the theme, “When Emergency Care Begins”, I encourage the community to observe this week with the appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities”.
