The DeKalb Animal Coalition has 2023 calendars for sale featuring pet photos and related information about them and the shelter.
The cost is $25 and all proceeds will go to a new voucher program to help control the stray pet population called the Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (S.N.A.P)
You can purchase the calendars now at the shelter on Transfer Station Road off Highway 70 east behind Tenneco Automotive.
“We feel this spay and neuter voucher program is needed in our community because more and more strays are popping up. We want to help get them fixed. These calendars have lots of pet photos and information about things going on at the shelter. If you would like to purchase one come by the shelter. They would make great Christmas gifts,” said Shelter Director Emmaly Bennett.
While you’re at the shelter, be sure to ask about “Oliver” the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Shelter featured “Pet of the Week”.
“Oliver is about two years old. He is a big lap house cat. Oliver is super sweet and loves everyone and everything. He loves to play with the kittens as well as other adult cats. He has been fixed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. He is an all-around good boy. His adoption fee is $100. Visit our website at https://www.dekalbanimalsheltertn.com/ to see his picture, fill out an adoption application for him and we will call you to come in and meet him,” said Bennett.
The shelter is open Monday-Friday from 8 to 4 and Saturday from 8 to 12

Local 9/11 Remembrance to be held Sunday
September 7, 2022

A local 9/11 remembrance will be held Sunday downtown Smithville.
This Patriot Day event will begin at 4 p.m. at Evins Park across from Justin Potter Library to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001 and to honor first responders for what they do in our communities.
Cody Purvis will be performing. All attendees should bring a lawn chair.
Patriot Day occurs on September 11 each year in memory of nearly 3,000 innocent victims who died in the terrorist attacks 21 years ago. On that day, 2,977 people were killed, 19 hijackers committed murder-suicide, and more than 6,000 others were injured.
Two planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon at Washington, DC and a fourth plane crashed in a field at Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Please join in this local observance to remember the men and women who lost their lives.
