By: Dwayne Page

Local businessman Glynn Merriman wants to become a member of the County Commission and will be seeking the Republican nomination in the DeKalb County GOP Primary on May 3.

Merriman’s formal announcement is as follows:

“My name is Glynn Merriman and I am seeking election for 5th District County Commissioner on Tuesday, May 3rd. I have been married to Rhonda Merriman for 39 years. We have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. I am a conservative and lifelong resident of DeKalb County; a local small business owner of Glynn’s Auto Sales, an active member of Smithville First Free Will Baptist Church and I am active in my community”.

“I believe that the role as a county commissioner is to listen to the needs of our community members and translate that into reality. If elected, I will serve as the voice for our community; both transparency and honesty are qualities that will represent our district. By listening to your concerns, identifying where issues lie, and problem solving cooperatively with the board of commissioners, I will strive to make continuing progress for DeKalb County. These values and qualities are vital to serving in this role for commissioner. I am prepared to stand up for what is best for our community, county, and our future. I would appreciate your vote and support in the upcoming election on Tuesday, May 3rd,” said Merriman.

New Splash Pad at Green Brook Park expected to be up and running by May

Youngsters will soon have a new place to go for summer fun.

Smithville Mayor Josh Miller informed the aldermen Monday night during their regular monthly meeting that equipment for the new 2,400 square foot splash pad at Green Brook Park has arrived and will soon be installed. It should be up and running by May.

“The splash pad has been delivered off site so hopefully in the next couple of weeks they will start construction on our splash pad. I talked to Mr. Adam Walton today (Monday) and we are still planning for May. I am hoping for the first of May. I will get with everyone and hopefully we can have a groundbreaking soon,” said Mayor Miller.

In November, the aldermen awarded a bid to Aquatix of Cookeville at $172,976. To pay for it the aldermen adopted a budget amendment authorizing an expenditure of up to $173,000 for the splash pad. The money for the project will be taken from the city’s unreserved fund balance.

Meanwhile the aldermen also adopted a $40,000 budget amendment on first reading Monday night to resurface the city tennis courts. Bids are being accepted through Friday.

The aldermen further approved a budget amendment on second reading to make a contribution of $20,000 to the DeKalb County Youth Baseball League for the repair and rehabilitation of the city owned Joe L. Evins Ballpark.

The funds for both projects will come from the city’s share of federal American Rescue Plan Act money.
