The Smithville Mayor and Aldermen held a brief monthly meeting Monday night at city hall.

The aldermen approved the hiring last month of Jeff Rowland to fill a vacancy in the public works department. Another vacancy, created by the death of Phillip Wilkey, is expected to be filled next month.

Meisha Johnson was appointed by Mayor Josh Miller to fill a vacancy on the Smithville Planning Commission. He also named Alderman Jessica Higgins as Commissioner of Finance and Alderman Beth Chandler as Sanitation Commissioner.

Mayor Miller also reported that progress is being made on construction of the new police department building.

“I spoke to Mr. Wayne Oakley (Architect) today and he said the goal is to have the trusses set by the end of the month,” said Mayor Miller.

Parade lovers joined in the fun of the Liberty Christmas Parade Sunday afternoon to help usher in the holiday season.

Smiling faces were plentiful along West Main Street from Salem Baptist Church to the reviewing stand near the Liberty Community Center as folks showed up to view the sights, to catch a glimpse of Santa, and to scoop up some of the candy tossed to the crowd.

This year’s Liberty parade featured a showcase of holiday themed floats, vintage automobiles, horseback riders, Grand Marshal Mayor Dwayne Blair and family, Mr. and Mrs. DeKalb County Sean and Christie Driver, special entries from local businesses and utility companies, ATVs and motorcycles, Smoky the Bear and the Tennessee Forestry Division, emergency vehicles including the DeKalb County EMS, DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department featuring the Liberty Station, Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad, Sheriff Patrick Ray, Constables, State Representative Terri Lynn Weaver, and more including the star of the show, Santa Claus.

Emcees for the parade for were Denise Page and her brother Jamie Page.

After the parade, awards were presented to the best entries and drawings were held for prize giveaways.

Wilson Bank & Trust won 1st place for their float entry. Second place went to the Richie Knowles family. Bryan Keith captured 1st place in the antique car category for his 1971 C10 and the Donny Agee family took 2nd place. First place in the kids category went to Alexis Reynolds of Pea Ridge/Dry Creek Road while Brayden and Kye Carter of Liberty received 2nd place.

Christmas is the season for giving and children who participated in Saturday’s 6th Annual
Regifting Event had a chance to experience that by doing something special for their parents and total strangers.

Regifting, an extension of the Patchwork UC ministry, gives children ages 4 to 12 an opportunity to shop for their parents or caregivers at no cost. The gifts are then wrapped, tagged, and prepared for Christmas giving. Kids also prepare blessing bags to share with others and quilt squares that are later used to make quilts for those in need. Donations are collected throughout the year for this event so that those who can’t afford to buy gifts can still share in the joy of giving by regifting something.

Kim Walker came up with the idea six years ago.

“I started this ministry about six years ago, called the Regifting event. The ministry is called Patchwork UC. We gather gifts for children to come and shop for their parents. They get two gifts one each for a male and female. It can be for their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. We help them wrap the presents and then they make a blessing bag. In the past blessing bags have gone to a women’s shelter, homeless shelter, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, and foster care. This year the blessing bags are for anybody in the community who needs a special blessing. The kids also decorated quilt squares to make a quilt. We are doing six quilts this year. Three for DeKalb County and three for the White County community. We do this because we love God and are trying to show His love,” said Walker.
