Miss Jamboree Pageant Set for Saturday, June 22

The annual Miss Jamboree Pageant is set for Saturday, June 22, featuring categories from 1 day old to 20 years old.

The first pageant begins at 11 a.m., at the DeKalb County Complex. It is open to all Tennessee girls and baby/toddler boys. The deadline to enter is Saturday, June 15.

The reigning 2018 Miss Jamboree (ages 17-20) is Destiny Danielle Franklin (right), the now 20 year old daughter of Jennifer and Charlie Ware of Smithville. The runner-up was Abigail Hope Taylor, 18 year old daughter of Ken and Cindy Taylor of Smithville. Taylor was also awarded for most photogenic, prettiest eyes, hair, and attire.

The annual pageant is sponsored by the Smithville Business and Professional Women’s Club.

The fee to enter is $25 per category, plus an additional five dollars for optional categories you may choose to enter, including “prettiest eyes,” “prettiest hair,”  “prettiest attire,” and “most photogenic.” A “People’s Choice” winner will be named in each category determined by the most money raised in the contestant’s “People’s Choice” box. Winners in the 11-13, 14-16, and 17-20 year old pageants are required to participate in the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree & Crafts Festival to distribute trophies, flyers, etc.

The categories are:

Boys and Girls – 1 day to six months,

Boys and Girls – 7 to 12 months

Boys and Girls: 13 to 24 months

Boys and Girls: 25 to 48 months

Girls: 4 to 6 years

Girls: 7 to 10 years

Girls: 11 to 13 years

Girls: 14 to 16 years

Girls: 17 to 20 years

How would you like to give a loving little puppy a nice home? How about four puppies?

Four Beagle mixed puppies were recently dropped off at the DeKalb Animal Shelter and they are the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Coalition featured “Pets of the Week”. The pups are about eight weeks old.

“Their names are Victoria, Ranger, Capri, and Bronco. They are healthy and playful and would make great pets. They have already had their shots,” said Shelter employee James Wilkerson.

The shelter, located at 186 Transfer Station Road behind Tenneco Automotive, is open Thursday and Friday from noon until 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon.

Someone knocks on your door unannounced and offers to sealcoat your asphalt driveway on the spot. He tells you about the great deal you’ll get. Once you give him your money, he fails to deliver.

Such a scam has been occurring recently in Wilson County as close as Watertown and Sheriff Patrick Ray urges you to be vigilant just in case DeKalb Countians are targeted. No such scams have yet been reported locally.

“The scammers go to a home with a paved driveway and tell the intended victim they will seal their driveway for them at a cheap rate. Most of the time the scammers ask for the money up front and when paid they usually leave without doing all the work or in some cases without performing any work .The last incident occurred in Watertown where an elderly man was approached. The scammers were reportedly driving a 2007 or 2008 silver Dodge Ram pickup truck, possibly a two wheel drive with a large black sealer tank in the bed. The driver was described as an older white male, 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs about 200 pounds . He also has a place on his neck possibly from a surgery.  The passenger is described as  a short Hispanic man,  about 130 pounds  and he is younger than the driver. Victims say  they believe these men could be from the Smithville area,” said Sheriff Ray.
